They're actually very low maintenance. I keep my bettas in 1-2 gallon tanks (one per tank of course, since their other name is Siamese Fighting Fish), drop a few pieces of food every other day or so (they don't really need to eat every day) and change their water every couple of weeks.

The toads get their tank cleaned once a week and I drop about a half dozen small crickets in there every night before I go to bed.

And since they don't really give a crap about me as long as they have food, I don't feel any guilt about the fact that they're home alone for 12-14 hours a day 4 days out of the week.

And y'all have seen these guys before, but I liked this photo so I had to share.

Great photo! I used to have fire bellied toads, and newts. Someday I would like to set up a vivarium again.

Did your toads pass or did you give them away? I've had my male, Ernie (the one on the left), for about 5 years now and I can't seem to find an accurate life expectancy for them. Some say 5, some say 25. I love them, but I don't know that I want to still be dealing with crickets when I'm pushing 50.

Well, I think I had the newts the longest (they were so easy to keep) and I think the oldest one was 3 or 4. I had two toads, and the think the older was also 3. I tried to keep frogs, and found that they were too delicate, and I was not skilled enough to keep the environment just right.
I went to Europe, without a clear return date, and had already asked my mother to care for two of my cats, so I brought them to a store that had a nice collection of amphibians and reptiles. It made me very sad, as I had grown quite attached to them. I liked the way they would track my movements in the room, though I really didn't like feeding them the crickets.

My daughter had a beta, but he only lasted about 5 months, he got some sort of weird whitish bumps on him. Someone told me it was called "Ick" Have you ever heard of it?

yes, Siamese mix. In the Cat Fancy magazines there is an actual breed called showshoe that she is the poster child for. she has the white toes and tummy but otherwise a lilac point siamese in every other respect. She is VERY smart and VERY territorial. she bullies my other kittie, Razzmatazz (Razzle Dazzle!)
here she is:

and here she is sniffing the camera! my razzle dazzle girlie!

it was dark in my room when I took them, sorry...

"Ick" is a very common fish disease (actually it's a parasite), that usually attacks fish who are under stress and therefore have weakened immune systems. There are several medications available to treat it from the pet store but the safest and least expensive way to cure and prevent it is to keep the watery salty (with marine salt or NON-iodized table salt). I usually put about a teaspoon of salt per gallon of water. It helps to prevent other parasite infestations as well and doesn't harm the fish.

Have you tried sneaking up on them while they're asleep?

They look so adorable that way and you don't get the crazy glowing eyes from the camera flash.
