Default Lindsey's change in 1978

I was just wondering why Lindsey changed his look in '78. IE shave the beard, trim the hair. I've always heard that it was his response to the punk movement and that he wanted that new wave look. this true?

I've alway suspected it, though Lindsey denies it. An interview from Musician Magazine in 1981:

MUSICIAN: Your stage demeanor has changed tremendously in the past five years. The guy with the peasant shirt and the beard and the curly hair of a few years ago hardly seems like the same person as the one on the Tusk tour, with the gray suit and short hair and the demonic stare fixed at the audience. Did that change come about as the result of any groups you'd seen or listened to?

BUCKINGHAM: No, absolutely not. I'm not even aware most times of what I'm doing when I'm up there doing that.

MUSICIAN: But what about the change in appearance?

BUCKINGHAM: Well, I decided to cut my hair long before everyone else did. It wasn't necessarily to look punk or anything. I was just tired of the beard, so I shaved it. Then the hair didn't look right without the beard, so I cut the hair. It's all been gradual. Found a couple of new clothes stores, started buying some new suits... As far as the movements, it's funny, because I used to do more of that when I was playing bass in Fritz. I think maybe when I first joined the band, it was such a new thing, and I wasn't sure of my role, I just sort of withdrew into the back. It's not something that wasn't there before, as far as the stage presence; it just wasn't coming out for a long time. It was sort of beaten back, I guess.

-------

Although I found this quote from the 2003 Mojo article interesting:

"But Buckingham was not for soothing. Engineer Ken Caillat, a Tusk co-producer and the boffin behind the DVD version due out early next year, still frowns on the guitarist’s contrariness: "He was a maniac. [...] Early on, he came in and he’d freaked out in the shower and cut off all his hair with nail scissors. He was stressed. And into sound destruction."

I think he just wanted a new look. That old folky hippie look served him for quite awhile.

His suit & cropped hair look for the start of the Tusk tour did sort of resemble the David Byrne thing. There may have been a conscious influence there.

It may have been purely aesthetic, too: the Turner looks better with the suit than it would have looked with the shaggy hair, beard & kimono. That latter look went better with the Les Paul.

Hey, I insist that I was born in the wrong friggin' generation. My parents generation got greats like Lindsey Buckingham, Tom Petty, Walter Egan, Warren Zevon, etc... My generation? F*cking Britney Spears.

And I'm sorry but the "Tusk" look is the only Lindsey look that I don't like.

I'll even take the somewhat pudgy look of circa '82 over the gaunt and androgynous look of Tusk.

But we all have our opinions.

Except of course that my opinion is right, so there!
You can have pudgy Mirage Lindsey then, but only the version in my avatar, aka Terrorist Lindsey.

So there? I don't care for Tusk Lindsey, either, although when I watch him live he does look better. It's mainly the eye makeup I don't like.

But you can't just group all Tusk together. There were several different Tusk looks, particularly on tour. Which ones do you like, & which ones do you not like? I'd like to know, amber!
