Vintage Vinyl News

http://www.vintagevinylnews.com/2013...e-edition.html

Artist: Fleetwood Mac
Title: Then Play On: Deluxe Edition
Release Date: August 20, 2013
Label: Rhino
Format(s): CD, DD

Fleetwood Mac's third album, and first for Warner Brothers, Then Play On will be released in a deluxe edition via Rhino on August 20.

The 18-track set combines the various releases that came out in 1969. The original U.K. LP contained fourteen tracks but the first U.S. release (September 1969) omitted two tracks (One Sunny Day and Without You which would later show up on the compilation English Rose). Two months later, the U.S. edition would be re-released, deleting the songs When You Say and My Dream and adding the progressive radio hit Oh Well. In addition, there were changes in the track order.

The new release presents the U.K. version of the album in the original track order, the single Oh Well (Parts 1 and 2) and the single The Green Manalishi (With the Two Pronged Crown) / World in Harmony. No word yet on new books or other items included in the set.

Track List:

•Original U.K. Release (September 1969)
◦Coming Your Way
◦Closing My Eyes
◦Fighting for Madge
◦When You Say
◦Show Biz Blues
◦Underway
◦One Sunny Day
◦Although the Sun Is Shining
◦Rattlesnake Shake
◦Without You
◦Searching for Madge
◦My Dream
◦Like Crying
◦Before the Beginning
•Added for Second U.S. Release (November 1969)
◦Oh Well, Part 1
◦Oh Well, Part 2
•Single, May 1970
◦The Green Manalishi (With the Two Pronged Crown)
◦World in Harmony

Yes, probably. It sounds like a great package. And long overdue.

It should have contained the Green Manalishi/World In Harmony single too.
Let's hope it'll be included on the "Then Play On" LP too.

Exclaim, June 28, 2013 by Alex Hudson

http://exclaim.ca/News/fleetwood_mac...panded_reissue

Fleetwood Mac are most commonly remembered for their classic mid-late '70s period, when Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks were in the band and they recorded classic albums like Rumors (1977) and Tusk (1979). Next, however, the band's early period will be explored with a reissue and a vinyl box set, which will arrive on August 20 via Rhino.

The box set is called Fleetwood Mac: 1969-1972, and it includes four albums from the years indicated in the title. These are the band's first four records for Reprise: Then Play On (1969), Kiln House (1970), Future Games (1971) and Bare Trees (1972). These have been pressed on 140-gram vinyl and come in their own reproductions of the original sleeves.

The set documents the band's transition from the blues of their early work to the folk and pop sounds that characterized their most popular period. It comes with a bonus 7-inch: a replica of the 1969 single for "Oh Well - Pt. 1" and "Oh Well - Pt. 2." The albums themselves don't include any extra material.

As for the aforementioned stand-alone reissue, it's an expanded CD version of Then Play On. This was the band's last album with co-founder Peter Green as a full member. The remastered and expanded edition features the original UK running order and is fleshed out with four bonus tracks initially released as singles, plus new liner notes.

Question

Aw man, if the single was Dragonfly/Purple Dancer they had me sold but now, meh, they must've used the UK TPO track listing on this vinyl issue of TPO as they can't reasonably do a vinyl version of what will be on the new TPO remaster (and have it sound good)?

It seems like a nice Box set. But the Green Manalishi and Dragonfly singles should have been included...

So basically it anthologises the brief period when the Greenie and Warners eras overlapped.

If this goes well, Kiln House with Dragonfly and Purple Dancer appended would be great as would Mirage, Tango and BTM with all their accompanying B-sides (whoops off topic!).

Default I understand

I consider TPO on par with big rock bands like Zeppelin/Stones/Who/Cream. Rumours is near my Eagles Greatest hits parts one and two.

TPO was the Green era Rumours, Kiln House was two confused guitarists with no direction, yet great Kirwan songs.

The UK TPO songlist is (ala Beatles Parlaphone) the proper song-list the US never heard. I like "Fighting for Madge" before "When You Say". It changes the US perspective of a GREAT and underrated ALBUM!

I never fully understood the album until I heard the UK release. Have you ever seen Green's original song line-up?

From Strange Brew:

side 1
Before the Beginning
Like Crying
Rattlesnake Shake
Although the Sun is Shining
Fighting for Madge
Without You
My Dream

side 2
Coming Your Way
Showbiz Blues
When You Say
Underway
One Sunny Day
Closing My Eyes
Searching for Madge

Interesting, most of the tracks remained paired together.
