Talking The remaining Melbourne 1980 songs available at Buckinghamnicks.net

A great show. Lindsey was acting very, very unusually. Just listen to the introduction to "Dreams" (previously posted), or that goofing around in "World Turning" or the beginning of "Go Your Own Way". It's as if he was mocking that choreography the group had adopted at the time. Just how many times has Lindsey said “you guys are great” on stage? That “Dreams” introduction is definitely a parody on how he usually introduced Stevies songs. However, at this point it definitely wasn’t influencing their playing. The ending solo on “GYOW” is so INTENSE that I’m jumping out of my seat. “Sisters Of The Moon” is the almost the same way. That’s enough variation for me. The jamming on “World Turning” is far funnier than the vest drum solo and again there are obvious differences from other versions. It’s funny that they’re playing “The Death March”, because they were also playing it on one of those Sydney shows that year.

I remember reading on the Buckinghamnicks.net board that it was Lindsey’s epilepsy that got him to act so bizarrely during “World Turning”. It’s definitely a possibility, and then he probably tries to cover it up later on. Of course it’s brutal to say it but this just makes the show even more interesting. Weird also, that his odd behaviour in this particular show isn’t mentioned in Mick’s book. You can’t use epilepsy to make money, eh?

I’d just like to thank Nancy for posting all this stuff. I must have downloaded stuff from her site for months. It’s great that someone who is still quite new to being a Fleetwood Mac fan can get all this stuff and expand knowledge and get awesome experiences. You’re doing very valuable work and I’m sure a lot of people are enjoying what you do.

Oh, and “Special Kind Of Love” sounds like a Tango In The Night outtake to me. But I guess anyone’s guess is as good as mine.

Thanks! My pleasure! I'm upset about Songbird, but oh well.

The epilepsy thing was just a theory - but I do know epilepsy medication and huge amounts of alchohol consumption can do strange things to your brain.

I guess Mick bypassed this for the more scandalous (and infamous) Rhiannon kick that occured around the same time (in New Zealand, I believe). It's funny that the Death March appears in another show around that time as well. Definitely some of the worst shows FM has ever done in the realm of attitude, but Lindsey still slams out SOTM like nobody's business. The man is unstoppable, lol.

And I agree about Special Kind of Love - it's probably one of those combo Lindsey/Christine songs done around that time. Do you think I should "transcribe" it as well as Take a Little Time - they are technically Lindsey demos, at least Take a Little Time is, and because of this theoretically they should be included. However, when the lyrics consist of four words repeated over and over... I can't decide! I'll probably wind up doing it, lol.

Thumbs up

Yeah, I think you should transcribe them. After all they're the only Lindsey demos we have that are not related to Gift Of Screws. It's always interesting to read these theories that people have posted. "Special Kind Of Love" should have them thinking.
The Three Birds Of Rhiannon has the lyrics to “Take A Little Time”. I can’t say how accurate those are though.

Welcome to the wonderful world of the improvisational jam!

It's not a world Fleetwood Mac steps into very often, but when the tour is long (like the Tusk tour) & the musicians are full of youth & fire, you're liable to get hot little jams out of them.

Christine (not Lindsey) is the one who plays that terrifically short little snippet of Chopin's funeral march during the "prep" for Mick to play his talking drum on "World Turning." It's nothing more than a little smidgin of color in the overall painting, & she often played it throughout the rest of the tour. Improvisation is an indispensable element of most jazz, but not so much of Fleetwood Mac-style rock, so when the Macsters let it happen, it's genuinely refreshing. (By the way, Chris once said that being in Chicken Shack taught her how to jam; it's an actual skill that musicians have to pick up.)

As for Lindsey's bizarre but brief antics at the Melbourne 3-11-80 show, I'd chalk them up to a) fatigue & b) Jim Beam. It happens to all musicians on gargantuan tours, with the possible exception of Anne Murray.

Christine sometimes had "Don't Stop" as a vehicle for a short jam too. I think it's funny that she used to play some cliches that certainly are recognizable to most people. She may not be the hottest piano blues player in the world, but all of those little quotes are funny and heartwarming.
