Default Who should/shouldn't cover FM?

In your humble opinions...

Who should and should NOT cover a FM song?

Should: Dolly Parton...hmmm...maybe Oh Daddy....(LOVE what she did with Stairway to Heaven!!), Amy Grant should sing Dreams, BBMak should do Save Me a Place, their harmonies are SUPERB!!!, No Doubt should do Sisters of the Moon and...Britney Spears should do Imagine.

Should NOT: Marilyn Manson (Oy...), Elton John (Don't Stop was HELLA-BAD!! ), Bruce Springsteen (I just don't like the man's voice...yuck).

I think it would be interesting for just about anyone to take on a Mac song and give it a twist, except for Britney, cause that would have to be breaking some law of musical ethics.Dave Matthews would do an AMAZING job with Tusk...cause it fits their sound so perfectly...i can't really think of any others off the top of my head..

Talking

No Doubt would do an awesome job with Sisters of the Moon!!!! i think that R.E.M could do a good job.....and Pink would do a good job too, not sure what song tho.
as for people who should NOT attempt to cover a FM song, i'd say Britany, N*Sync, any of those types, should not even try, because, like Sarah said, that would have to be breaking some law of musical ethics.

Although not a Fleetwood Mac song, I'd love to see her do Stand Back. But with the way she belts out some songs with her semi-raspy voice style, I could almost see her doing Rhiannon. I know people might not give her too much credit as an artist right now, but the girl earned my respect as far as singing goes when she quarteted on Lady Marmalade.

Default Hmmm...

Rufus Wainwright may prove interesting, as may be U2 (or has U2 done one?). I'm thinking Save Me a Place or That's All For Everyone would be good for Rufus, or even Storms or Songbird. I'm not sure yet as to which one U2 should do.

I personally wouldn't want any female artist besides Bjork to take a stab at covering, just because she could make things strange or wild, nothing mainstream. I bet she could go nuts on Straight Back, or better yet, Tango in the Night. Wheee!

love to all,

Amy Yeo

I rarely find covers to be that good. I'm one who would much rather hear the original than another artists interpretation of what they believe the song should be.

However, I think No Doubt might be able to pull off Sisters of the Moon quite well. I can see Pink doing Rhiannon as well.

I think Sara Maclachlan could do Beautiful Child. She has such an amazing voice and could definitely cover the music. I think she could also cover some of Stevie & Christine's softer songs.

As for who shouldn't cover FM:

I've heard many horrible covers:
Rod Stewart--Stand Back
Zeke--Rhiannon (OMG! If you've never heard this trust me, you aren't missing a thing! It's atrocious!)
Shawn Colvin--The Chain
Elton John--Don't Stop (I love Elton but this was a mistake!)
Camper Van Beethoven--the Tusk cover album reaches new heights on the scale of awful

Any heavy metal band has no business doing a cover.

Awful? No. Imaginative and daring? Most certainly yes. Camper Van approached the covers the way they should have approached them, which is to put their own original imprint on the songs. That is what Lindsey would do, as he did with the Rolling Stones covers from the GOS sessions, Satisfied Mind, September Song, Here Comes the Sun, you name it. He would expect nothing less, I'm sure. I can just see him rushing to the W.C. to puke his guts out after listening to the Rumours tribute. Talk about awful!

As for folks who should cover Fleetwood Mac and put their own imprint on the songs? Glad you asked:

World Party -- Over My Head
Mulehead -- I Know I'm Not Wrong
North Mississippi All Stars -- Rattlesnake Shake
The Strokes -- Eyes of the World
White Stripes -- Oh Well
Elvis Costello -- Gypsy
Cracker -- Go Your Own Way
Ryan Adams -- Say You Love Me
The Eels -- Tusk
Marah -- That's Enough For Me
Shelby Lynne -- Landslide
Lucinda Williams -- It's All Right
Wilco -- Can't Go Back
Fatboy Slim -- Little Lies
Sheryl Crow -- Save Me a Place

Now you're talkin'.

OK, why can I actually imagine Elvis Costello singing Gypsy? That would work surprisingly well.

Laura.

Yes, of course! If he can do Burt Bacharach. See my insanity is not entirely devoid of some genius!
