March 12, 2010 while mowing grass (yes, MARCH) I saw a "cut up" moccasin.
Though fresh-cut, it wasn't from me...hmmm..... |

All my life I had a massive phobia with snakes, 6 months ago I freaked out when my 14yr old son walked in the house with a 6ft Australian coastal python around his neck, he tormented me for over 2 months, wanting me to touch/ nurse/ have it around my neck , he thought it was hilarious hearing me scream everyday he brought it out of it's cage, often he would sneak up behind me when I was doing the dishes or in the pantry, I would scream & almost pass out, it escaped from it cage I was petrified for 2 DAYS until it was found, which was hiding near my bedroom:distress Anyway not long after I thought I would give reverse psychology a go, as still my son was getting a kick out of scaring the $#@T out of me. I finally worked up the courage to touch it, after a few days I was OK with holding it, now I love, appreciate & respect pythons.. our deadly snakes we have downunder, I don't mind them dying from the hoe!!!

While not exactly a snake, there's a armadillo that's making holes all in
my yard. His days are numbered............ |

wow.I've have not seen any this year over here.I remember when I was little, my mom sliced and diced a good size snake with the riding lawnmower,I dont recall what it was ,but it shot out of the mower deck like pieces of hot dogs.Say about 18 years ago ,my ex-neighbor had a python snake around her neck, boy it was a big sob.
I was not afraid of him,but ,I had nights of thinking of it coming into my apt and cuddle up with me in bed.

I've seen plenty...
of rattlers in my neck of the woods, but to my surprise I have yet to see scorpions...Weird.

Here in Florida you see all kinds of critters. I was stupid and not thinking last night up in the morning and opened the front door and as soon as I did, the hairiest spider I've seen since being here, ran in. It's like they wait at my front door at night wanting in at the chance. And don't think about leaving somewhere during the day and forgetting to leave on any outside lights when coming home at night. I've had to immediately run inside and flip on the lights as soon as I turn the key. And quickly slam the door and pray no unwelcome visiters followed me in. If I'm careful at the door, nothing seems to get in otherwise and no other problems. But you do have yard snakes here, especially outside the city in more scrubbier/woodsy areas and I have seen a very tiny baby scorpion but the ones here aren't harmful unless you have allergic reactions to stings. I just stay clear of Florida critters if at all possible and a screened lanai is an outdoor must here.

Here on Long Island, we're kinda boring with our wildlife (OK, I heard about deer problems further out east from me), but we do sometimes see a garter snake minding it's own business now and then. Now, our funny wildlife thing is definitely the squirrels I get in my backyard. Y'see, we give bread to the birds outside, but the squirrels seem to enjoy eating it too, and while doing so, they tend to look inside, giving a look that says they want an iced tea. Seriously.

I've had encounters with southern squirrels. Once, I was at Disney World and had gotten into Epcot one morning via the International Gateway (it's a entrance at the World Showcase for the park that people at the Epcot area resorts use). As me and my parents (yeah, they're Disney fanatics) were rushing through the yet-to-be-opened World Showcase so we could get to Soarin' before it got too crowded, a squirrel came darting out of the bushes. What followed was a stand-off between me and the squirrel, and the squirrel won. Seriously.

Had to bump this thread cause I thought iamnotafraid might appreciate this
Fall break for the kiddies was last week so my girl midget spent some quality time with her grandpa...in backwood Alabama obviously. The snake was in the birdfeeder and had a bird half way down it's throat, but not for long! Grandpa gave it a swat and out went the bird. Then the midget shot it with a BB gun. Then they took this picture. It makes me cringe a little.

Great picture. You two can go snake hunting with me anytime. She can even bring her Daisy BB gun, they're so much fun. |

The hunting day was not over for them after the snake. They also shot a couple squirrels. Guess what was for dinner? Nice and crunchy "chicken." Kids always think its chicken. ha ha. In general though anything that gets killed (within reason and you know snakes are within reason) get's cooked and ate. Ya know, I was raised on hunting and fishing and doing all the other things you do when you're raised by a dad. I couldn't wait to move away from there and be as girly as possible. I didn't eat meat for several years. Now that I"m back around I really do appreciate it and am glad my little lady gets to kill stuff with grandpa...but she also gets to be girly with me.
