Is Lindsey on magnet and Steel?
I think I can hear Lindsey (as well as Stevie) doing backing vocals for Walter Egan's "Magnet and Steel" - am I right? I figured you guys would know.
Thanks! ~jamie |

YES, he is...
Also, he helped re-do the song with Matthew Sweet for the Sabrina the Teenage Witch soundtrack (TV). I like Lindsey's contribution on the newer version, as he re-crunched the guitar and its more "him". |

I absolutely love that song! It could have/should have been a great Fleetwood Mac song. I have live version of it with Lindsey performing on it. Not sure where it came from, but it's great! Walter Egan is a pretty generic artist, but his Magnet & Steel is one of his best songs.
I don't know much about Matthew Sweet other than he is a much lauded, respected music industry player. I definately like his style. In fact I just got a CD called Under The Covers -- it's Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs (The Bangles) doing cover songs. I'm very much in line with their musical influences. It's a great album of them doing songs from the Beatles, Mamas & Papas, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Love, Beach Boys, The Who, The Velvet Underground, The Zombies etc...Alas no Fleetwood Mac. But it's a fantastic, albeit obscure album.

Um, no. Much as I love Walter Egan, Fleetwood Mac is not lacking in talented songwriters and really have no need to use the work of other people.
But yes, as confirmed by Walter himself during his Q and A session here on the Penguin (many years ago), backing vocals were by Stevie Nicks, Annie McLoone, and Lindsey Buckingham - though the liner notes for Not Shy credit John Selk with Lindsey's parts. |

I love Magnet and Steel. Brings back some lovely summer memories back in the day when that song had heavy rotation. I was feeling nostalgic and went to iTunes to see if I could download it. I did, but wouldn't you know? The version on iTunes was a re-recorded version without Lindsay and Stevie doing back up vocals. I was really ticked off. Luckily I still have the original 45 single I purchased as a kid, so I drop it on the turntable.

There is a boot of just the vocals done, apparently, in WE's basement. I's LOVE it if someone posted that

You can download an MP3 of the 1978 version at WashingtonPost.com, it's free and totally legal. There's even a link to the download from Walter's official website. Here's the url for downloading (it will ask you to agree to some terms of use first): http://mp3.washingtonpost.com/browse...l?song_id=5996 |

I've only seen it available for download on iTunes, which is of course a paid service. But then again, I haven't really looked for it (Bad fan, I know).

I remember seeing Walter Egan in concert back in 1978 at a local amusement park here in RI. Those were fun times. I just wish that I had brought a camera with me. It would have been very easy to take a 110 camera inside the park.
