I'm impressed with the music this band did on their Tusk songs after sampling Over & Over and That's All For Everyone

You've got to check out their cute album cover.
The cover is very funny in its nod to the actual Tusk cover; as it has a dog and the shoe (s)!
The one song that really stuck out and impressed me most was the rendering of "What Makes You Think Your The One" as a ballard. It sounded just like a long lost Velvet Underground song! The approach was very Lou Reed-ish. It gave the lyrics a whole new context.

Here’s The Problem: There are some things that I will carry with me for the rest of my life – one of those things is my love for Fleetwood Mac. This love began when I was 14 and had no life and watched a lot of VH1 Behind the Music…anyway. So, today, I was listening to The Dance and I was singing Silver Spring at the top of my lungs (that Stevie can yell, man) and I notice flashing lights. Cop lights. I hate cops. I pull over – and for some reason – I do not turn down my music. So Officer Pain in My Royal Ass signals me to roll down my window – I do. He begins to speak – but then – stops – and says “The Mac?” SAVED. “Yes! It is!” I say, filled with joy. He tells me he loves them – and then says to slow down a bit in residential areas. Then, I get to work – go to Starbucks- guess what’s blaring on the speakers?? FLEETWOOD MAC.

Actual Problem: None. It’s gonna be an awesome day. Thank you Stevie! xoxo

Marcus Foster has been generating quite a buzz recently with the imminent release of his debut EP Tumble Down, out on 4th April.

Featuring four tracks rich with languor and melancholic life, the EP’s lead track Shadows Of The City got it’s first play on Zane Lowe’s Radio One show earlier in the week. Such was the listener response (comparisons to Jeff Buckley, Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham et al) that they played the track again in the same show.

Now they’re pretty big boots to be compared with, and we were more than a bit sceptical when we got a copy of the EP’s title track to listen to…

Turns out we were misguided. This boy can sing. Listen for yourself on the slow, six minute burn that is Tumble Down.

The musicians make you feel their raw but eventually optimistic pain with relatable lyrics crafted around airy layers of melodies and a few tracks marked by the sort of wailing solos that bring you down to the depths of the moment the despair hit. Plus, Sherri and Stacy DuPree have ridiculously clear, angelic voices that even sound pretty when they’re fuming at “you and all your friends who didn’t like me” and “that apocryphal wedding.” Harmonies abound, as usual – a highlight being the Fleetwood Mac-esque vocal layering of “whoas” in “Oxygen Mask.”

Don’t assume this is entirely an angry-chicks-using-art-to-emotionally-murder-their-wrongdoers album. Granted, a small portion of it is. You’ll definitely want to leave a copy of “Smarter” on your ex’s doorstep, and nothing will chill your bones if “Please” doesn’t. But what you’ll really hear on The Valley is a family re-grouping following low points in their lives.

The title track from the new Wye Oak album Civilian is a funereal march on which a lament is sung. The Baltimore, Maryland duo treads darker waters with their new material, and this song is cut through with mournful imagery and a reckoning of loss, an examination of what we change, what we lose, and what we can’t shake. Vocalist Jenn Wasner lays down the melancholic lines “I don’t need another friend / When most of them / I can barely keep up with them / Perfectly able to hold my own hand / But I still can’t kiss my own neck” like a statement of resignation, laying her flaws bare.

Wasner’s voice recalls the sultry depth of Fleetwood Mac’s Christine McVie, and the rhythmic, gothic Americana swing of the song plays up her most plaintive elements. As the song ramps up in its latter half, multi-tracked guitar lines fall into fitful, jabbing solos swirling around hummed harmonies. Wasner and multi-instrumentalist Andy Stack build “Civilian” from a simple lament into an intense and defiant track upon layers of guitar feedback, sustained organ tones, and the loping, rueful march of the drums.

'All Of The Lights' is testament both to Kanye West's ego and to his talent. As to the former, who else could imagine a posse track featuring contributions from Rihanna, Elton John, Alicia Keys, Drake, Elly Jackson, John Legend, Fergie and more - and who else possesses the sheer chutzpah to bring it to fruition?

As to the latter, well, first there's the song itself, a tale of domestic abuse, imprisonment, adultery, parental separation and financial struggle set to a genuinely momentous pop noir opus that comes off, just kinda, like a hip-hop version of Fleetwood Mac's 'Tusk'. Then there's the fact that, even though he doesn't really appear during the final two-and-half minutes, we're never in danger of forgetting that this is a Kanye cut. Talent? You know, maybe even genius.

Loch Lomond's Fleetwood Mac Cover & Tour Dates
Posted Feb 24th, 2011 (1:47 pm) by Alex Gordon Share This

Loch Lomond is a Portland based collective whose latest release Little Me Will Start A Storm had us buzzing last month. This week, it's a pitch perfect cover of Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain."

On Little Me Will Start A Storm, Loch Lomond performs exercises in subtle construction, using their numerous members (up to nine musicians) to create deep and somehow modest compositions. But on this cover, it's pretty much just a mirror reflection of the Mac's original. If you've heard the original but don't know it well, you might struggle to discern one from the other. But it's a great song and they've earned a little wiggle room with Little Me..., so it's enjoyable either way. Listen/download below.

Little Me Will Start A Storm is out now on Tender Loving Empire.

Loch Lomond 2011 Tour Dates:
February 25 - Tacoma, WA @ Peabody Waldorf Gallery
February 26 - Portland, OR @ Alberta Rose Theater
March 5 - Seattle, WA @ Crocodile
March 7 - Bend, OR @ Tower Theater
March 11 - Savannah, GA @ Savannah Stopover Festival
March 12 - Savannah, GA @ Savannah Stopover Festival
March 15 - Austin, TX @ SXSW

Retromania hits Cascades
February 25, 2011 9:07 AM

The tribute acts Dreams and Arrival perform March 4.Photograph by: submitted, for Langley AdvanceNot just one, but two tribute bands - paying tribute to some of the best music of the 1970s - intend to blast out the speaker system at Cascades Casino's Summit Theatre next Friday.

In a show dubbed Retromania, the bands of Dreams and Arrival will resurrect the magic of Fleetwood Mac and ABBA.

Seven people make up the two bands that have travelled around the world performing.

Dream, The Ultimate Tribute To Fleetwood Mac, is a group of talented, diverse performers who came together in 2005 with a passion for the music of Fleetwood Mac, one of the top bands to grace the charts in the 1970s and '80s

Even today, 30-plus years later, you can still hear Fleetwood Mac's music on radio stations around the world.

It was with that thought in mind that Dreams was born. The cast of Dreams takes great pride being able to replicate the Fleetwood Mac sound so closely that it's difficult to tell the difference.

From the music to the costumes, Dreams performs all the hits, as does Arrival, which has played hundreds of sold out live shows, replicating the sound, characters, and stage experience of ABBA.

"Arrival delivers with such incredible and enjoyable authenticity you feel that you are actually witnessing ABBA in concert," said show promoter Rob Warwick.

Arrival and Dreams perform in the Summit Theatre at Cascades, 20393 Fraser Hwy. starting at 8 p.m. on March 4.

Tickets are $32.50, and available from the casino's guest services or Ticketweb.ca.

Default Interview with Boy George

AE: On the album you cover Fleetwood Mac’s "Go Your Own Way." With so many Fleetwood Mac songs to choose from, why that one?

BG: What happened is I was invited to do ‘Night of 1000 Stevies’ in New York and spent three weeks going through every Stevie song and every Fleetwood Mac song, but couldn’t find one that I thought I did well. There’s a lot of music that was so well done, and I thought, ‘Oh god, do I dare do these songs?’ The night of the event, I was a bit nervous, so I thought, ‘Why not try to do a song reggae style,’ and the original cover was done as a reggae track. That’s how we started and it worked like this — it suited the song and it’s such a brilliant song. If I could choose, I would have written it as a reggae track.
