Default A GUITAR playing related question

Lindsey dosn't know it, but he 's been directly responsible for me walking into a music shop , buying a guitar and practising chords to FM music for about a year!
(I saw him on the Dance and that was it, I just had to get one!!).
Do you perhaps play without a pick? Act like a madman/woman onstage/ in your room? Play nothing but LB songs, or indeed own an LB type instrument...c'mon, own up and tell us how this gorgeous man has influenced you ( musically that is...)

It all started for me in 1977. Yes Lindsey has greatly influenced my playing. Landslide was the first for me, still trying to perfect it.
If only I prcaticed hard all those years, I would be so good now.
But you know marrage, children and things took the place of my guitar. In the last few years I have picked it up again.
I never use a pick unless Im at church and have to lead with it.
But I love finger picking as much as I can.

Check!

Check! (He says, as he continues to cry at the two letters "OD" at the end of all his bank balance statements!)

I don't however, "only play LB songs"...that would be a little too nuts, and musically unhealthy!! Although 95% of the Mac songs that I play are LB ones.

I can't and never will be able to play guitar , but I model guitar patches on my synthesizer and then play things like The Chain, NGBA or This Was Mine and convince myself it sounds as good as a real guitar But when you said 'LB type instrument', I definitely class my synth as one. It's Roland for a start, which is what he models his guitars with, plus he's relied on synths so much over the years, at least in the 80s.

Lindsey has been responsible for me learning new keys:
A flat - Down On Rodeo
B flat - Eyes of the World

But as Seteca said it's not all Lindsey - I learnt G minor from Radiohead's Paranoid Android

Thumbs up Hehehe....

I can actually answer this thread too!!

YES!!! (In my best English accent) 'Twas Lindsey the GREAT who inspy-ud me to play the gee-tah. Lost Christmas, I received my very own Fendah acoustic and knighted it Liddy Buck! ( ) I have not, howevah, been keeping up with my practicing like a good axe-playah should. When the FM heat dies down, THEN, I shall pick the instrument up again and rip it apaht!! BTW, I con't work with a pick, so fingah picking it is.

I play patriotic songs, Christmas songs, FM and LB songs as well.

I thank GOD that I found Lindsey, because his music is inspiring and has changed my life. NO OTHER MUSICIAN has touched my life the way Lindsey has. Call it obsession if you want, but I don't see it that way. Music has ALWAYS been a part of my life, helping me in the dark hours and making me happy in the light hours. It's hard to explain to the average, casual music listener, the guy/girl who turns on the radio in their car or maybe listens to the radio at work or whatever, how important it is to me. It's literally, a lifeline. If I had to choose, I'd rather be blind than deaf, because not hearing music...would be a tragedy.

Hmm... there's a good thread topic I'd have to say I'd choose deaf becuase our most important sense (alongside touch I guess) is vision, IMO. Remember Day of the Triffids?

Tough question

Simple as that. His music has motivated me to pick up a guitar day in and day out.

Talking

Hi all.

Yes,pickless is the way to go. I haven't been playing the
way I should, but recently "picked" it up and started again.
OH, the PAIN of it all!

I use a thumb pick occasionally, when my nails are too short.
Mostly without though.
I started playing when I was 12 (we won't go into how long
that has been!) but Lindsey was definately my mentor
to really work at it,(1977 started me on the Lindsey bandwagon
as well).

Music has always been my outlet and gotten me though
some really tuff times. It's my "habit"...gotta have it!

I started playing before I started listening to Lindsey, but he has definitely had an effect on me. More in the desire department.. when I listen to him play, I just want to pick up my guitar and get goin'.

I occasionally.. rarely.. use a pick on my electric if I'm playing with friends. If I can find a pick, that is. I lose them.. even in the little pick holders! But mostly without as I play acoustic (nylon) most of the time. Sometimes.. probably once a year.. I'll use a pick on my regular acoustic guitar.

My grandmother gave me her guitar when I was about 6.. but I just messed with it until I was in like, the 6th grade. A few years later, I found Lindsey.. and I've played non-stop ever since.

I prefer to write my own music, rather than playing covers. I don't do lyrics... Not my department.

We need to put pictures of our guitars up!!

Default on a very serious note

I don't want this post to get too long, but I have a feeling I'm about to ramble on a bit - so please bear with me friends:

This is a very serious topic for me, as Lindsey has affected me in a way that no other musician has. Now, I'm not a guitar player - I'm a keyboardist. But Lindsey taught me a lot about production and the true artistic value that can be achieved through music.

The funny thing is, it didn't start out that way for me. When I was a kid, I didn't really understand that stuff, nor did I really have the deeper understanding of music that I eventually aquired over the years. When I first discovered FM during the mirage era, I didn't realize the significance of Lindsey's contribution. But When Tango came out, it all began to become very clear to me. For me, the real turning point was contrasting Out of the Cradle with Behind the Mask. There was no contest at all. Out of the Cradle changed the way I looked at music (as did Go Insane, when I discovered it around the same time). So what I thought was happening all along with FM really wasn't the case. The truth was this: LINDSEY MADE FLEETWOOD MAC SOUND THE WAY THEY DID - HE WAS A GENIUS! (and still is)

I said to myself, "I want want to push the sonic envelope like Lindsey did...I want to tear down all the boundaries". It didn't mean that I wanted to sound like him - but I wanted to experiment with music, to truly create something unique in painting that canvas. This, perhaps most signifcantly, meant that I wanted to be able to do trippy things in the studio during the production stages, like experimenting with panning, layering, and the stereo spectrum in general.

It's too hard to describe - but you all know what I'm talking about

I have said all of my adult life that Lindsey has been the single most influential person in my life. He taught me what I know. Unfortunately, he raised the bar so high that I've had a hard time being satisfied with anything I've written. But I'm finally at a point where I'm going to do it. I've been working on my songs for the last ten years (just writing them, but mostly scrapping them - lol). In the last two years, I have finally written at least 60-90 minutes of songs/sequences on my Korg TritonPro which I think I'm going to stick with. So I'm about to put all this knowledge gained into recording my first "solo" album. For the first time in my life, I have professional gear and access to the best musicians in the area and a state-of-the-art digital hard drive recording studio. The time has come. This is going to be an extremely high-quality "national-release-sounding" CD, and I'm excited. I have Lindsey to thank for finally bringing me to this point of entering the recording studio. I just hope it doesn't take me another ten years to get it done - lol!!! Actually I'm constantly working on it and it should hopefully be done within the next year or two.

ok ok ok - enough out of me folks - thanks for reading

david

Default Not alone!

Lindsey has inspired a good number of us to pursue musical production but along with the added bar of ingenuity and slickness he has presented us with over the years, plus the overriding dogma of taking your time and approaching the process contemplatively - enjoying the process as much as the results!
Keep at it David, and I look forward to hearing the final product

Cool

Very well put David.
You're among friends here, and yes we all understand.

I'm sure Lindsey would be pleased that he has made such
an impact on you, as music is so important to him. His
empasis has always been on following your heart, and
you obviously have.

I wish you well in your endevors and hope to hear some
of your fine work, when you have it "tweeked" the way it
suits you.

Just don't follow Lindsey's lead too much...or we won't
hear it for 10 more years!! Hahaha.

Good Luck!
