What happen is the ground wire broke and the stereo left and right positive wires are connected in series to the ear bud speakers like Christmas lights.

I've intentionally hooked up systems with the same results.I call it "Karaoke on the cheap".

It also work if you just plugging in the earphone halfway into the socket. Some times it works and sometimes it dont. The effect accidentally happen the other night while I was doing some recording. The plug was not push all the way into the jack.

Sorry about the electronics geek talk. Its years working on electronics gear.

Wow Stevie and FM the Muzak"Elevator music" way.

No problem.

I would not recommend trying the hookup with a expensive stereo system.

It will cook the speaker output transistors or output integrated circuit chips or the speaker it self .

The earphone output jacks are only flea power and it should not harm the device .

The effect is also called Phase Cancellation. You can make the effect happen on some editing software. Basically it takes one channel of the stereo signal and inverts it, mixing it with the other so that everything in the center channel is canceled out. What you're left with is the stuff that is far left or far right in the stereo field. A lot of recordings put the vocal center with everything else spread out so when you cancel the center channel the voice goes but everything else stays.

Yes Thats what happen.I had a brainfart the other night of the right term.

Any instrument sound only from the left and right is heard but the artists/bands vocal and drums bass guitar and what ever other instrument in the center will get cancelled out.
