I had recently watched the "Classic Albums" episode about the making of
"Electric Ladyland". One of the best from this series.

and one of Jimi's closest musical allies...sad.

That is kind of sad news. I always enjoyed his style. As a great example, take a listen sometime to "Third Stone From the Sun" on the Experienced album.
