Mick Demos Drum Styles to Sierra Canyon 4th Graders
Mick Fleetwood, Classic Rocker, Demos Drum Styles to Sierra Canyon 4th Graders
[VIDEO] Mick Fleetwood, of Fleetwood Mac fame, gives music history lesson and performs a mini-concert with Sierra Rock Band coach Howie Anderson in Mrs. Rosen's music class. from the Feb. 17 "Trailblazer Weekly," Sierra Canyon School's Newsletter A Music Class 4th Graders will Never Forget! On Wednesday(VivFox's Birthday), music specialist, Mrs. Rosen, invited Mick Fleetwood to visit the 4th grade to enhance their unit on the music of the 1960s and the British Invasion. In class, the students have been exploring videos and listening to the music of the era, while discussing the peace movement which is reflected in the music. The different genres of music from this period include Rock, Folk, Surf Rock, and Motown. They also learned about the historic concert, Woodstock. Mick Fleetwood knew many of the bands of that time, including the Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Fleetwood Mac was formed in 1967 as a Blues-Rock band. For our 4th graders, Mick demonstrated, with the assistance of our own Sierra Rock Band coach Howie Anderson, the difference between a Blues Rock sound and straight Rock and Roll beat. They performed a blues song as well as Johnny B. Goode, a Rock and Roll standard. Mick played his famous drumming styles while Howie sang and played the guitar. We also watched a video of Fleetwood Mac and Mick played along with the video. At the end, the students asked a variety of question about his life in the music industry. It was a once in a lifetime experience for our 4th grade students, and the staff as well! http://chatsworth.patch.com/articles...on-4th-graders |

I think the gravity of that situation will escape most of those fourth graders. All they might remember is that some famous giant old man played drums with their teacher. Only the staff could really understand and fully appreciate it. I would love to hear what kind of questions the kids asked.

Quote:
I do think drums are the instrument that most young children would be drawn to, because they aren't worried about finding the 8 beat. They just see it as making noise in a pattern, but what to them is not a set patter. Therefore, on the surface, it looks like something they could master without technical knowledge or training. So, I think it would be more fun for them to have Mick come than some pianist. Michele |
