Post Buckingham Nicks was mentioned on NPR in December....

Thru work, I have access to a research database called Ebsco... which hosts articles and info from thousands of magazines and newspapers.
Anyway, I was playing around with it today, and did a search on "Stevie Nicks," and this is one of the items i found... a transcript of an NPR radio show, from December of 2002.

I omitted Bill Ferris' and Tim Page's segments, because they weren't related to 'Buckingham Nicks.'

Title: Interview: Anthony DeCurtis, Bill Ferris and Tim Page discuss their favorite vinyl releases not yet available on CD , Weekend Edition Sunday (NPR), DEC 01, 2002
Database: Newspaper Source

1:00-2:00 PM , From NPR News, this is WEEKEND EDITION. I'm Liane Hansen.

(Soundbite of music)

HANSEN: If you're in the midst of holiday shopping then odds are you'll stumble into a record store at some point. And while you're perusing row upon row of CDs, consider for a moment what you're not seeing. There are classic recordings by Neil Young, Aretha Franklin and Cannonball Adderley, just to name a few, that have never been officially released on compact disc. So over the next four weeks, we're putting this question to people throughout the music community: `What are the best albums that never made it to CD?'

Mr. ANTHONY DeCURTIS (Contributing Editor, Rolling Stone Magazine): Hi. I'm Anthony DeCurtis. I'm a contributing editor at Rolling Stone magazine. And the record I've selected is "Buckingham Nicks."

(Soundbite of music)

Mr. DeCURTIS: "Buckingham Nicks" is a collaboration between Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. It's a record they made in 1973, well before they became famous with Fleetwood Mac. And this record is the catalyst. You know, all of the tension that Fleetwood Mac would become very famous for are really present on this record.

(Soundbite of song)

Mr. LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM: (Singing) Baby, baby, don't treat me so bad. I'm the best one that you have ever had.

Mr. DeCURTIS: The "Buckingham Nicks" record really got caught up, first, in a lot of, you know, record company politics and then sometime in the '80s, the masters reverted to Lindsey Buckingham, which is kind of both a great thing, in a sense, 'cause, you know, it's his work and, you know, he should own it. On the other hand, Lindsey is--take your pick--either a perfectionist or a complete obsessive. He keeps threatening and he keeps making noises that eventually, it's going to come out, but, you know, it's kind of, like, you know, this is a guy who makes a solo record about once a decade or so. And there's some question about whether or not we're ever going to see the "Buckingham Nicks" CD version.

(Soundbite of song)

Mr. BUCKINGHAM and Ms. STEVIE NICKS: (Singing) Oh, won't you let me down again? Yeah.

That's really cool, Johnny. I remember about 10 years ago Lindsey was interviewed and was asked about a CD release of Buckingham Nicks and I vaguely recall he said it would be out soon and will be worth the wait. I'm still waiting.

Now can someone clear this up for me? I have read in several places that Lindsey owns the rights. However, Stevie has said in interviews that they share ownership...

Anyone?

Default Thanks!

Johnny Stew, thanks a bunch for sharing that. You really have to wonder, if Lindsey owns those masters, what the heck holds him back?

Perfectionist. Obsessive. Hmmm

Lindsey & Stevie do both own the rights.
I'm not sure if the article is online anywhere, but Lindsey mentioned in an 1992 Billboard magazine interview with Timothy White, that the rights had reverted back to he and Stevie, and that they planned on releasing it on CD around the same time as the Fleetwood Mac boxed-set which was coming out later in the year.

Eleven years later, and still no 'Buckingham Nicks' CD.

I'm not sure what the exact hold-up is, although Stevie has said that Lindsey wants to "tweak it" a little before they release it (perhaps HE wants to master it for compact disc, rather than having someone else do it?).

September will mark the 30th anniversary of the album's release... maybe we'll get a cool anniversary re-release?
Still, I'm not holding my breath!

Hey guys,

Can it be that the reason Buckingham Nicks still hasn´t been released is that according to the Ken Caillat Q & A on the Ledge, the original master tapes were in such a terrible condition, they had to be "rebaked" again to prevent them from falling apart. It seems quite a painstaking and precise and therefore maybe very expensive and slow process!

But of course I want the album out on cd a.s.a.p! Perhaps as stated earlier in this thread for the 30th Anniversary in September. They could add some unreleased bonus tracks and demos as well to make it a true document of where they were heading in case Fleetwood Mac had not come into their lives!

Greetz,

Marcel.

That might be a reason for the eternal delay, but if the masters are in such bad condition, I wouldn't mind them using a mixture of masters/copies/vinyls to produce the CD. Ultimately what I'd like to see is the Buckingham Nicks CD officially released, regardless of its sound quality. However, with the amazing technology nowadays, I'm sure they can produce a pretty decent sounding CD.
