Smile Rumours Review in Entertainment Weekly

I got the latest copy in the mail today and they have a small review in the music section. Here's the transcription:

Fleetwood Mac, Rumours (Warner Bros.)
The 27-year-old (!) milestone gets the directors-cut treatment (as do Fleetwood Mac and Tusk).

Extras: A disc of studio outtakes proves the quintet was no jam band: Early pre-overdub versions of "Dreams" and other tunes are nearly identical to the renditions we know. At least the haunted B side "Silver Springs" is here. B

I hate to say it, but I agree with EW. Except for Stevie's vocals on a few of the alternate takes, everything sounds very similar to the originals. Although EW didn't mention that it's nice to have the early "Think About It" and "Planets" as well as LB's short "Doesn't Anything Last."

But "Butter Cookie" isn't even a song.

I agree. The bonus disc on Rumours is pretty ****ty. Yeah, there are five or six great ones on it, but the rest do absolutely nothing for me. It's as if they took out one little vocal or guitar part and called it an outtake.

Yeah, but were they worth the inflated price? Don't get me wrong, I love them, but most of the other tracks suck teabags.

I think so. I mean they are damned if they do and damned if they do not. I think the reissues are fine, esp. Tusk!

I would've bought them anyway just because the old CDs sound like they were transferred in tin cans, but the extra disc on Rumours just blows to these ears. Most of them sound like the originals, IMO. On the other hand, Tusk is fantastic. That has a great bonus disc. I love that one to death.

I haven't been able to find the Tusk reissue yet, but I think the tracks on the Rumours and FM reissues are not spectacular. Of course, I'm still glad they put them out.

What I have found great so far, are the pictures that come with the FM reissue--some I haven't seen!! The Rumours outtakes pics are all old news.

Even the FM reissue liner notes are better than the Rumours liner notes. Without "Think about It" and "Planets," I think most purchasers of these discs would be a little disappointed in their "newness."

I thought that there would be more "new" unreleased tracks on the reissues. But the sound quality is very good. I'm especially looking forward to the Mirage reissue. The original CD I own sounds really crappy. Plus, I didn't own FM on CD. So, I could justify buying them rather easily.

Mirage reissue would be fantabulous! I know what you mean with the sound...it's one of those "quiet" CDs where you have to max out your stereo just to hear it at a decent volume. Perhaps some songs we expected as bonuses were not included because the band still has intentions to record them on a new album.

With Stevie pulling so many tunes from that era for TISL & SYW, that's highly likely.

And, then in about 10 years, the NEXT remaster/reissue of Rumours will include the 1977 versions of them.
