Tomayto, Tomahto.
I have to say, I have never, ever, read the word "abut" before. I'm suprised and pleased that I even knew it.

He would have scored higher if he had managed to use the word "abutment."

Isn't that, like, the name of a beam you use to hold up the "loft" level you have built in your Tahoe cabin?? And yes, the use of abut was correct.

I never said it wasn't. Just that you would have scored higher if you had used "abutment" somehow, silly.

Again, isn't that some sort of structural term? Let's ask my old friend "dictionary.com"

Abutment:
1. The part of a structure that bears the weight or pressure of an arch.
2. A structure that supports the end of a bridge.
3. A structure that anchors the cables of a suspension bridge.

Whereas, "abut" means: To touch or end at one end or side; lie adjacent.

1. To border upon or end at; be next to.

So, in fact, as I suspected, Strand did use the term "abut" appropriately, but the term "abutment" would not be appropriate in this case.

So, to sum up: Strand is right, Diss is wrong, and Amber gets points for her super vocabularic knowledge. As you were.
