Default Sucky News for Rumours.

Shania Twain goes Double Diamond

by Paul Cashmere

10 December 2004

Shania Twain's 'Come On Over' album has jumped past The Beatles 'White Album', AC/DC's 'Back In Black' and Fleetwood Mac 'Rumours' to become the 6th biggest selling album of all time in the USA.

'Come On Over' has been certified Double Diamond for sales exceeding 20 million. (Diamond is awarded at 10 million sales, Platinum in the USA is for sales over 1 million).

Shania's album as a double diamond release is in exclusive company sitting behind The Eagles 'Their Greatest Hits' at 28 million, Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' and 26 million, Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' at 23 million, Led Zeppelin 'IV' at 22 million and Billy Joel's 'Greatest Hits' at 21 million.

The Diamond certification was first awarded in 1999. Unlike the Australian ARIA certifications, the American system is based on sales to the public. Elton John commented at the inaugural certification ceremony "I think this is the biggest accolade you can be given because it means your fans have gone out and bought your records. And that's why we make records - for our public."

The first person to receive a Gold Award was Perry Como for 'Catch A Falling Star' on March 15, 1958.

The first platinum single was awarded to Johnny Taylor for 'Disco Lady' in 1976. The first platinum album was The Eagles 'Their Greatest Hits'.

I think Shania is a good artist, but she's not in the same league as the others IMO. She released practically every song from Come on Over as a single....very smart move. She seems like a nice person, though. I don't have anything against her.

I agree. I like Shania Twain and there's something in many Canadian's like myself that almost forces us to like her for the mere fact that she IS Canadian. She has a nice success story. But, she is NOT in the same rank with the other artists. Oh well...

I have Come On Over...I don't listen to it anymore. Needless to say I have Rumours. So she doesn't win in my house.

Wink Well...

Quantity does not always = quality. I like some of Shania's songs, not a huge fan tho..but good for her.

Rumours will always be one of the greatest albums ever made...no matter what.

Yeah, even I got to admit that Come On Over was a pretty good album. "That Don't Impress Me Much" was a danmed catchy song that I really liked back when it was released. Is it in the same league as Rumours, NO, but I can see it being sucha big seller.

The brain child behind Shania's success is her husband Robert Mutt Lange

I am a fellow canuck and I say congrats to Shania! My thing is though 20 years from now people will remember Rumours. But will they remember Come On Over?

That is exactly how I feel too! Shania may be good, but she is no Fleetwood Mac, and Come On Over is NO Rumours!

I kinda like Shania, but I have heard "rumours" she is starting to get "not very nice" in the personal department. It's a shame when they start going nutsy as the fame and money come in. Why can't they all be like John McVie and stay down to earth? *sigh*

Yea, I guess that's true. But on the other hand how many extra copies of Rumours have been sold because it's spanned the media formats of vinyl, 8-tracks, cassettes, cds, and remastered bonus track editions. I think I've bought at least five copies of Rumours myself over the years. Needless to say though Rumours is one of the best classic albums of all time.
