David...I would totally do it!!! As someone who has been to London countless times, with the last time a few months back, here's my two cents .....

In my opinion, I think you're better off staying at a hotel right by there. It will be cheaper than staying in London, although if you book now for a central London hotel, this far in advance, the price should be cheap. I have always used hotwire, kayak or priceline.
Also, if you do stay in central London, you'll be closer to the airport, cab wise. However, when you land, you'll find a kiosk right by the luggage pick-up. There is a London hotel shuttle service for 30 pounds (for round trip), this is roughly $ 60, and they will take you to your hotel and pick you up on the day you need to leave, as long as you give them the time. A cab into London will cost you 100 pounds; $ 200 dollars!
If you do decide to stay in Central London, the tube stop is about 10 minutes fast walk to Wembley Arena. It's a great Arena!! Someone else said it right; there are signs posted, you can't get lost. London doesn't even begin to get dark till 10pm. (LOL)
Hope that's good advice for ya!
