Well, I don't know how to follow the previous legal dispute, but I just wanted to say that i have been listening to TP's last DJ, and I really like it alot. i really like "money becomes king", track 2. It is a sentiment not lost on Lindsey I am sure.
ALTHOUGH, I really hate to say I don't care for "the man who loves women". You can't hear Lindsey at all until the end, and he is only credited with background vocals, and there are other songs on the CD I like better. I hate that. I wanted to like that one, and after about three run throughs, I don't! WAH!

Yes.

Sulasmith, I'm sorry to hear that. But you like the album as a whole, so that's cool.

Default The Last DJ

It takes me a while to digest a whole new album; I like to listen several times first. But a few initial impressions:

Several songs use orchestral arrangements with strings and horns. "Dreamville" is one where it is especially prevalent.

On the whole, for me, I think the slower, softer, acoustic songs work a little bit better musically: "Dreamville," "Like A Diamond," "Blue Sunday" (which has a few country edges here and there).

The faster tunes have their moments too. "Lost Children" is a good guitar song, as is "Can’t Stop the Sun." The title track, "Money Became King" and "Joe" have those good, typically TP, sardonic stories to tell. "Joe" is an absolutely caustic, scorching, ultra-cynical take on the worst of the music biz:

My name is Joe, I’m the CEO
I’m the man makes the big wheels roll…

Go get me a kid with a good-looking face
Bring me kid can remember his place
Some hungry poet son of a bitch
He gets to be famous
I get to be rich

Or bring me a girl
They’re always the best
You put ‘em onstage and have ‘em undress
Some angel whore who can learn a guitar lick
Hey, that’s what I call music...

So burnt-out Johnny thinks our books are shifty
What good’s that alchi to me when he’s fifty?
We could move catalog if he’d only die quicker
Send my regards to the gig and case of good liquor.

One minor complaint is that in a couple of songs I think he gets a little bit too wordy, but that’s just me.

I think I do like "The Man Who Loves Women." It’s definitely on the light-hearted side. It’s a nice contrast to the heavier stuff. It’s a mildly Beach Boy moment, in a way.

The last two songs on the album - "Have Love Will Travel" and "Can’t Stop the Sun" strike me as the songs sounding most like the rock’n’roll TP & the HB sound. The latter has a great guitar-heavy ending. "Have Love Will Travel" is the one that’s probably edging out the others as a favorite right now for me.

Where can I download this song. When I get it off Kazza, I get a looped version of the chorus.

OK, I've been listening some more, and this CD is really growing on me alot. There are some absolutely brillant lyrics in these songs.

Like I said earlier, my fav is still "money becomes king". It is a long story song with a lyric sheet that is very Stevie-esque in proportion, so all I can say is you just have to hear it. It is written from a fan's perspective about how inaccessible rock stars become to the "true fans" who were loyal before all the fame and money.
As someone else said, "joe" has some very powerful imagery that just makes me want to say "Yeah! Tell 'em Tom!"

one verse I really like is:

so burnt-out Johnny thinks our books are shifty
what good's that alchi to me when he's fifty
we could move more catalog if he'd only die quicker
send my regards to the gig and a case of good liquor
he gets to be famous
i get to be rich

The whole song really skewers the music suits!
I know Tom and Lindsey have probably had many conversations on this subject!

The last song, "can't stop the sun" is also basically saying to the industry a big "screw you"!

well you can take my money
you may turn off my microphone
but you can't steal
what you can't feel
can't stop the sun from shining
down and down and down

and you may think you control things
but there'll be more just like me
who won't give in
who'll rise again
can't stop the world from turning
round and round and round

hmmmmmm..............sounds just like something Lindsey would say!

So, Sula, should I run out and get it? Should I spend next month's CD budget?

You might want to check out Steve Earle's Jerusalem. Anyone who appreciates a musical flip of the bird would like this album.

Well I got it for 15.99 at Barnes & Noble, but I wouldn't do without lunches for a week to get it or anything. It is enhanced, with a photo gallery and stuff, and in my opinion it's a good CD.
It has a bit of quirkyness to it that appeals to the Lindsey fan in me, like the little bicycle bell at the end of "the man who loves women". I can't help but wonder if Linds had anything to do with that! There is also a radio theme throughout, with radio tuning noises and static leading into and out of some of the songs.

It just depends on how much you like Tom Petty. I like him alot, and have most of his work, but even for me, I didn't run panting into the music section breathless and snatch it off the shelf.

That will be me in April when this frigging FM thing finally makes its appearance!

.....and maybe just little on Oct 15th......I gotta see the interviews and vids on VBoFM!

I heard the new Steve Earle record "Jerusalem" is great. I'm definetely gonna check that out.
Speaking of other new and good records, Jackson Browne's new one is very good, and the new Beck album is magnificant!

Heart Ukulele on OOTC !!!

I agree with Sulamith...lots of Lindsey Quirkeness!
I like his bells and whistles and silliness in the mix!

FYI...Lindsey plays what appears to be a soprano
ukulele on tour for OOTC as a tribute to Carl Wilson
"All My Sorrows "...it is a nice sentimental moment!

chili...I meant...ahemmm!!!Let the man up! He's doing
the best he can under the circumstances! A legend is
gone...this was a voice choking moment for Lindsey!!!
To me Lindsey was flustered and sad and having a hard
time with his emotions during the song tribute! Luv,Sky
