The Daily Gazette [discussing Rolling Stone list]

The top 100 guitarists of all time: Who's No. 1 on your list?
Gazette Staff February 17, 2016

http://www.dailygazette.com/news/201...ime-whos-no-1/

Lindsey Buckingham is No. 100, Ritchie Blackmore is 50th, and Jimi Hendrix is No. 1.

That's no surprise at the top, because Hendrix long has been regarded by fans and critics as the greatest guitarist of all time. But is No. 100 too low for Buckingham, who helped give Fleetwood Mac its distinctive sound? And is Carlos Santana, who pioneered the fusion of rock and Latin American music, being severely overlooked at No. 20?

The "who's the best" debate rages in all aspects of our existence, but it takes on a special meaning in music, where artists and their loyal followers give their souls to produce or listen to life-changing albums.

The above rankings come from Rolling Stone magazine, which released them in December after assembling a panel of guitarists and other experts, including Gary Clark Jr., Eddie Van Halen, Trey Anastasio and David Fricke, a senior writer for the magazine.

Check out the top 100 list, and think about who the panel has ranked too high, too low, or forgotten altogether. Then let us know on our Facebook page what you think about the list.

100 Lindsey Buckingham

During Fleetwood Mac's hitmaking era, Lindsey Buckingham transmuted the folk music of his banjo-playing youth into stadium rock: glistening harmonized leads, crisply snapping chords and frenetic arpeggiated breakdowns. "It's not acceptable classical technique," he has said. "You do what you can to get the sound you want."

Key Tracks: "Rhiannon," "Go Your Own Way"

It's official; John Lennon was a better guitar player than Peter Green (and LB). I want to eat my headphones. Experts eh?

This is coming from the same magazine that just released the Top 100 greatest albums of all time and not only was Rumours (which is what like the the 3rd best selling album of all time) not on it, but not a single FM album made the list at all. Blasphemy!!

X2 ^ ^ ^ , its more a popularity contest than reality. Lindsey is truly deserving of at least top 50, IF not Top 25. Trey Anastasio over Lindsey?? What are they smoking???

Remember too, music and talent is so subjective that its near impossible to rank anyone and I for one would not put Hendrix where he's at, BUT that's just me.

The peers that voted for this poll must of had too much pop as they cast their votes.

1) Lindsey has taken 'Pattern picking' to another level and pretty much invented a whole new way to play the guitar. Not sure there are many guitarists that can make a claim to being truly innovative.

2) Lindsey has created some of the all-time most recognisable and iconic rock guitar passages.

3) Lindsey is diverse in the music he makes.

3) Lindsey has genuinely influenced loads and loads of musicians. There are so many youngsters discovering his music and being influenced to play guitar like him.

4) Lindsey plays I'm So Afraid like a badass live.

Should 100% be in the top 50, could quite easily make a case for top 20 and he wouldn't really be out of place in the top 10.
Despite FM's surge in the general cultural consciousness over the past 10 years or so, appreciation for LB's guitar playing hasn't significantly grown at the same time. As much as I hate to talk about death I suspect he might only become properly recognised some years after his passing. A real shame.

Lennon has NO place here. If anything, put him at #100. I don't even think he deserves that.
