February 4, 1977
Today in music, Fleetwood Mac released their 11th studio album, Rumours. The Grammy-award-winning album contained singles “Go Your Own Way”, “Don’t Stop”, “Dreams”, and “You Make Loving Fun”.

Rumours is often considered Fleetwood Mac’s best release, and has been listed by many musicians as an inspirational album.

Recorded in Sausalito, keyboardist Christine McVie said of the Rumours recording sessions “The sessions were like a cocktail party every night—people everywhere”.

Happy 34th Birthday Rumours!!!

This album changed my life for the better. The front cover has influenced my life more than you could ever imagine and the music within you is timeless, classic rock.

1.) Go Your Own Way- Fleetwood Mac

Duh. Of course Fleetwood Mac would be number one. Every God forsaken song is about their messed up incestuous familial unit. It's hard to pick just one song because there are like ten million songs of them where they're all whining and bitching about each other. Christine divorced John, Stevie left Lindsey, Stevie slept with Mick, Lindsey pouted a lot and made weird, retarded dance moves while playing the guitar. To every Stevie's "I'm going to refer to you as a metaphorical crystal!" song, Lindsey wrote a, "I hate you, farm animal- sounding devil woman!" guttural equivalent. There is no better example of Lindsey's wrath than the classic hit Go Your Own Way- Lindsey's big ol' "f you" to his former flame. Stevie dumped Lindsey during the making of Rumours due to Lindsey having his big ol' white-man fro shoved so far up his ass. He was really taken aback by the dump, which is strange considering EVERY SONG ON THE PRIOR ALBUM FLEETWOOD MAC WAS ABOUT STEVIE'S UNHAPPINESS IN THE RELATIONSHIP. Lindsey was so hurt and pissed by Stevie's gall, that he wrote the most blatantly childish and emotionally bipolar I Hate You!/No, I Love You! songs of the 1970's. Go Your Own Way is about as psycho as a twenty-one year old girl with daddy issues. In the song, Lindsey runs the emotional gamut from questioning- "How can I ever change things that I feel?"- to generosity- "I'd give you my world"- to anger- "Go your own way!"- to accusatory- "Shacking up is all you wanna do"- to optimism- "Everything is waiting for you". It's obvious Lindsey didn't know what he was thinking or feeling. If his aim was to piss Stevie off, then he succeeded. Stevie is quoted as saying that she wanted to walk over and strangle him onstage every time the line, "Shacking up is all you wanna do" came out of his mouth. Lindsey and Stevie's drama was bad for them, but great for us. Their twisted little soap opera ran for decades- long after the pair split up- with an estimated 30 songs written about each other. Sadly, the drama has quieted in their old age. Lindsey finally settled down and had kids, Stevie lives alone and collects Yorkies and dream catchers.

It's funny how big commercial successes are usually hated. I mean, usually they blame on the bands, but I think they should blame just on the people.

I'm gonna be honest, if it wasn't for that album, I wouldn't be here right now. A fantastic album IMO, my gateway drug to the Mac and a big one to my current musical world of old-school rock and metal.

Anyways, while i do disagree that some folks hate it cause it "ruined" the Mac, I can say I have the same feelings for Metallica's Black Album. Before it, they were a fantastic thrash metal band and, while the Black Album sold a lot and made 'em very popular, it was awful (c'mon, in regard to ballads, Nothing Else Matters doesn't even hold a scented candle to the awesomeness that is Fade to Black) and the more mainstream alt sound that evolved from it sounds awful to me.

So basically what I was saying that just because an album sold a zillion copies doesn't mean everyone is gonna be sold on it or be all that great. Rumours, however, is still a great album IMO.

The 2nd Mac album I heard. Though I like several albums over it, Rumours is a classic. I believe this album will never die

This surprisingly wasn't my first Fleetwood Mac album, nor is it one of my absolute favourites. Don't get me wrong, I do love it. But as far as my love goes, Tusk and Tango In The Night have it in abundance. Rumours in my mind was somewhat safe. It only challenged lyrically. But Lindsey threw himself on the line with subsequent albums to push the boundaries of what they were capable. Not always appreciated owing to the fine detail and painstaking work involved, and the obvious fact that they weren't flagrant rip offs of Rumours. Rumours was it's own entity, but people expected more of the same breed of work, and when they daned to try something different they weren't appreciated for it. But anyway. That's the past.

Rumours is a beautiful album emotionally, and deserves its place as one of the greatest.

If it was a case where the band promoted the album on the subsequent tour, then just played a couple of random songs from the album on tours after that, I'd agree with you. But, no, Fleetwood Mac has made a conscious effort to keep the entire Rumours mystique alive for 34 years. That's the band's doing, that's the band's fault, that's the band's downfall.

I actually agree with you Steve. Rumours was a blessing and a curse for this band. Every tour since 1977 has felt like the Rumours Tour, though not as exciting.

Thanks Viv. I try to sound smart, even when I'm feeling braindead after a week of school and stressing about a history class I dropped (no one told me the word "colloquium" meant writing 5, 2-page papers, a 4-page proposal, a 15-page research paper, and read a 400-page book in a week, just that you sit around yakking, which would've been right up my alley

Happy Birthday to Rumours!! I think this album was definitely a blessing to the band, and the only reason they keep playing the songs from it is because the audience only wants to hear the hits, the classics etc. Unless you're a hardcore fan like us, e.t.c. But really, Heart still plays 'Magic Man,' 'Crazy On You,' & 'Barracuda,' at just about every set, and I am the biggest fan, but on Wednesday when they played those songs it was like I was hearing them for the first time again. I think it would be the same way for me with hearing the Rumours songs in a Fleetwood Mac set.
