A 10-hour countdown of the best guitarists in rock will celebrate both National Radio Day and a membership drive for Harvard Community Radio.

Beginning from 9 p.m. to midnight Aug. 21, the volunteer-run radio station at WHIW-LP 101.3 FM will host a three-day programming event featuring the 100 greatest guitarists as determined by Rolling Stone magazine.

Throughout the event, in which various broadcasters will play music and share facts about the guitarists, community guests will visit and share their thoughts on the guitarists as well, said Bill Clow, Harvard Community Radio president.

“It should be a lot of fun, a lot of good music and good conversation,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of people coming into the studio to join us. It should be a good party. We do hope that people will like what they hear and want to become a member.”

The countdown starts with “Midnight Metal,” a radio show hosted by Sarah Flashing, counting down the guitarists ranked from 100 to 71. From 7 to 11 p.m. Aug. 22, a “Saturday House Party” featuring on-air personalities and friends of the station will focus on the guitarists ranked 70 through 31. The event will come to a close with “The Etc. Show” hosted by Clow from 8 to 10 p.m. Aug. 23.

The radio station, also airing live at www.harvardcommunityradio.com, officially earned its FM license and began broadcasting at 101.3 FM last spring, having been in existence for about five years through a limited AM frequency.

With the “100 Greatest Guitarists 3-Day Show Extravaganza,” the hope is to draw attention to the station and gain more volunteers, Clow said. The station now has about 30 volunteers, both on and off air.

Volunteers are needed to help with everything from producing shows to office work, bookkeeping and marketing, Clow said.

“Not every volunteer has to have a passion for getting behind the microphone,” he said. “There are a lot of jobs. We can find a job for everyone.”

The station recently added new programming, including “Harry’s Trailer Park Basement” music program hosted the third Saturday of the month by new on-air personality Joe Starzynski featuring “the adventurous and open spirit of music.” A new “Blues Crossroad” program hosted by Roger Adler, a local blues guitarist of Roger Adler and the Blues Deluxe, airs from 8 to 10 p.m. Tuesdays.

The “100 Greatest Guitarists” show should appeal to a broad audience as the guitarists featured hail from every genre of music, Clow said, with artists, such as Lindsey Buckingham from Fleetwood Mac, Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Willie Nelson, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page.

Any idea if this is the same list that put Lindsey at 100 or have they come up with a new one?

I don't know. But if he is at 100, then I guess no one has to listen too long to hear the segment about him. He'll be first up in the countdown!

Yeah, it says as determined by Rolling Stone. I'm just curious if they updated their list or if these guys are reading the old one.
