Doesn't Stevie call Jimmy Iovine "little one" in the booklet inside of the Enchanted boxset? My memory is terrible, but seems like that's where I saw that. That always made me think that maybe this song was about him. At least partly, anyway.
And Mad4Stevie...I know *Stevie* feels that way...that he was "telling the world" she was shacking up with different men. lol...We discussed this on the BN board...some of us just think that maybe she (and us too, at first) misinterpreted what he meant. He probably didn't correct her because of the reaction he got from her for it. lol! It's all speculation, of course. Maybe he *did* mean it the other way. It's fun to try to figure out the meaning behind all their words, though. ~Angela~ |

I really don't see how this song could be about Don Henley. I mean, I definitely could be wrong...no one knows for sure. I think Stevie really wrote this song in a fit of rage. Maybe that line "My first mistake was to smile at you" doesn't sound like something she would say to Lindsey, but "there was nothing more than that your heart was broken" definitely sounds like something she'd say. But, to me, this doesn't sound like a song about someone breaking her heart, nor she breaking someone's. This just seems like a tangent after someone pissed her off...and wasn't Lindsey always all over Carol Ann when Stevie was around, and kind of throw it in her face? Again, more signs for me point to this being about Lindsey, but it could be about Don Henley.

Smile At You!!!
IMHO ...We thought this song was about the Don Henley...
Tom Petty...Jimmy Iovine era of her love life! She was mad at all the men she knew...they did not understand Her Life! She proved that in her Storytellers by ending the Show ... "They were priests of NOTHING!" What a statement! Sky

It made my day when I found out "Smile at You" had finally made it onto an album. Frankly I don't see how they could improve on either of the two demos. I'm afraid to listen to the new version. In my opinion, I like the less angry demo better. Lindsey's guitar playing is more effective on it, especially towards the end. Also, I too have always thought this song had to do with Don Henley. Someone told me the story behind this song a long time ago. I think Henley got into some trouble with a young girl at his house about the time he was seeing Stevie. Can someone back me up on this? Thanks Les. That's how I remember it too. I imagine Stevie was not very amused and penned the song shortly thereafter. Even in the shorter demo that I like, which I guess she did a few years later, she still sounds very passionate and not to be messed with!
