I'm So Afraid, original version...
Ever since we've had The Dance (and other live) version of this song, it's so easy to dismiss the white album version as "inferior". But I have begun a love affair with it!!! Lindsey and Stevie's vocals are positively haunting, as is the overall sound of the song...and those juicy acoustic guitar bits in contrast with the electric! I'm fanatical about the "powerhouse" versions too, but the mood of the white album version suits the song so well and, if I may just say it once more...I LOVE IT!!!

It's very jarring to listen to a live version and then pop in the White Album to listen to the original.
I never warmed to the studio version, probably because I don't like the way he sings it. It's totally not his range, but he does it anyway.

Yeah, the studio version is in the key of Gm...the live versions (even as far back as 1975) are in Fm. Amazing how just a full-step drop in key can change the entire feel of a song.

I love the studio version too.
The thing I really love about it is the haunting harmony guitars during the solos, something which he only ever attempted to do live during the OOTC tour. I say "attempt" because it didn't sound anywhere near as good as the original harmonies - Neale and Steve's tone and playing sounded too polished. |

Uh yeah...
Greatest song ever written!! I love any version, even if he did a heavy metal/reggae version...LOL!!
I love his high pitched vocals on the original. Perfection.

His high-pitched vocals sound so tentative they turn the song into more of an "I'm Somewhat Anxious" than the powerhouse of intensity that is "I'm So Afraid" live.

I like the studio version, but it's not a favorite.

I prefer studio to live, although I love it live too. The harmonic guitar solo does it for me. You can't duplicate that for a live performance. You can try, and Lindsey did, but that's true good studio work.

I never really cared for the studio version, it seemed out of place to me on the record. I LOVE the live versions from The Dance and SYW - and the older live versions too for Stevie's harmonies.

The studio version just does not COMPARE to the live versions, BUT I still love even the studio version.
