Well it absolutely has a dated sound, more than anything he has done. A sound that was in for about ca 3-4 years, that means during a very short time period. I remember having bought it in late 1988 and thought that it sounded mid-eighties dated even back then! Just technically the sound is not too good also. Sounds as if someone lays a towel over the speakers if you play it.
I like the cover and some of the songs though I'd like to hear them produced in a more timeless way. Here's my evaluation:

Good: Go insane, D.W. suite
O.K.: I want you, Bang the drum, Slow dancing
so so: I must go, Play in the rain II
Not my cup of tea: Loving cup, Play in the rain I

I really think this is the best thing he's done solo. Not counting GOS, which is even better.
