Paper Doll- anyone else love this song?
This song is just plain fun, I love it! Anyone else like this song? No one ever talks about it, but I think it is great!
Why does everyone hate Stevie's stuff from the late 80's early 90's? I think Paper Doll is one of her best, as well as some of her stuff from OSOTM, BTM, and Street Angel.

I agree, I LOVE this song too. "Woah, we were off the wall", my favorite line

Yeah, It's different for a Stevie song, but I love it... I just listened to it, when I shoveled my driveway

I adore this song. Another FM song that has such dark content but sounds extremely peppy (see also: Monday Morning and Second Hand News, etc). Her use of dialogue is particularly striking in this song, too: my fave lines:
"he says: 'well I have forgotten you and your beautiful eyes. We were off the wall, we were mirrors of our former selves' " I love this song. |

I love it too. My uncle and I tore it apart in the car one day and figured out everything they were saying. Then we sang it the rest of the day... he did the background, I did Stevie.
Oh, the good ol' Honda days...

Beautiful eyes / lies
I love that part too.... But I always thought it was "I have forgotten you and your beautiful lies" -- which I always though was such a cool line. Either way, it's all good.

Count me as another fan of "Paper Doll."

Also a big "Paper Doll" fan. Though I always thought it sounded like Mick was playing a tin garbage can lid in the beginning. They should play it in concert, along with The Ledge. Mick can play the tin-can lid for PD, and Lindsey can pull out a big rubber band for The Ledge.

One of my all-time favorite Stevie songs!!! I'm glad to see other people loving it! The lyrics! The bass line! The tempo! Stevie's phrasing! "Whoa! We were off the wall" is too great for words.
"Yesterday I was fascinated by somebody else..." LOVE IT ! Though I definitely prefer the band with Lindsey, I am not against the BTM era...and this is one of those songs that I feel is better suited with Rick and Billy. Their background vocals 'go' so well. This song is perfection. |

I think this is one of the rare cases in which Rick, Billy and Lindsey are in the band. Lindsey came up to do some guitar/vocal overdubs after the song was done, I think.
I am another fan of this song, BTW. Like the lyrics, like the almost crazy beat, the organ... Like it very much. Song of the moment - Steal Your Heart Away

I thought it sounded really hokey when I first heard it. There's something about the banjo-ish spounding guitar or something-not sure how to explain it-that I just couldn't stand. I like it a lot better now. I was surprised that it got a small amount of airplay and actually made the Hot 100- I think it went to 90 or something (not much to brag about, but still...).
The "she refused to wear her coat" bit always seemed kind of clunky lyrically, but I love: you prefer to be just a little bit in & out of agany you prefer to be just a little bit in and out of love with me Well yesterday I was (Yesterday I was) Fascinated by somebody else It seems like even in the few Stevie songs that I ever really just don't like (Thousand Days I like far less even than Paper Doll-kills me to listen to it) there are at least a few lyrics that I really like. It's alright.
Lyrically I like it alot...she say's some really beautiful things...but I just think it should've been done differently...maybe a tad slower. Everytime Stevie sings...."you pre-fer to be"...I can't help but do a 'bobblehead' move....she's enunciates it too much....like she's teaching syllable's to a bunch of second graders. I could definately see it as a slow, funky kinda song. But that's just me (I'll duck as I leave this thread now ) |
