Journey, Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers to Join Eagles + Fleetwood Mac at Classic East and West Festivals

Eagles and Fleetwood Mac will headline a pair of new music festivals to take place on the east and west coasts this summer. Journey, the Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan and Earth, Wind & Fire will also perform at both events.
According to Billboard, the Classic West festival will take place July 15 and 16 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, with Classic East set for July 29 and 30 at Citi Field in New York City. On both weekends, The Eagles will headline Friday night with support from the Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan, while Journey and Earth, Wind & Fire will open for Fleetwood Mac on Saturday.
According to Billboard, “A number of big-time music companies are involved in the blockbuster concert concept including Azoff MSG Entertainment, Live Nation, the Oak View Group and CAA.” It is hoped that this will become an annual event. Ticket prices and on-sale dates for the festivals have yet to be announced.
Organizers undoubtedly saw the money taken in last year by last year’s two-weekend Desert Trip festival, which featured performances by some of classic rock’s biggest names, including the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Neil Young, Roger Waters and the Who.
This will be the Eagles’ first live performance since the death of co-founder Glenn Frey in January 2016. Don Henley, the only original member left in the band these days, previously said the Eagles were breaking up following Frey’s death. But the Eagles have broken up before, and that didn’t stick either.
Billboard notes these are the only concerts on Fleetwood Mac’s schedule for this year. A new album by the band was supposedly put on hold while Stevie Nicks tended to her solo career. Lindsey Buckinghman and Christine McVie, in the meantime, had announced a duets album that featured performances by the group’s other two members, drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie.

with all respect to Live Nation- Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan and Journey don't quite compare to the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, the Who and Roger Waters. Would still be a great event anyway though.

Those artists have been classics since the 60s. Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, Steely Dan, and the others are more 70s and 80s.

If Frey was still around, I'd put the Eagles up against pretty much any of those Desert acts. The Mac is big of course but not in that realm.

But Frey's gone... This will be like if McCartney had Ringo with him and called it a Beatles show.

I personally disagree, I don't think the Eagles are at all in the same realm as the Stones or any of those bands. In terms of great bands I think Eagles are on pretty much the same tier as FM, Heartbreakers maybe in similar tier as well.

But the thing win the Eagles is that although they sold well, they're pretty heavily criticized especially in more recent years for not really growing at all musically. And of course that scene in Big Lebowski kind of kickstarted the "I hate the Eagles" thing.

Glenn Frey's solo career had some good songs (I really like The Heat is on and Smugglers Blues) but he had more crap then really good songs. The two that I feel were awful were "The One You Love" and "Livin Right" but Soul Searchin, The Allnighter, and Love in the 21st Century were pretty bad. I would even say that Joe Walsh's solo work and James Gang material was much better then most of Glenn's solo output.

Don's solo work is pretty solid. I loved Boys of Summer. It is one of my all time favorite songs.

As for the newley announced acts I am underwhelmed. NONE of these acts could fill a major stadium on their own and if it were not for the endless oldies package tours some of them have done over the years they would be playing state fairs and casinos for less then 1,000 people in most cases. That doesn't mean I am not a big fan of these acts (I love the Doobie Brothers) but this lineup pales in comparison to Desert Fest.

I'd put Eagles at the same level as FM and The Who. In terms of legendary status then Bob Dylan wins hands down. However, as in-demand live entities that people would pay good money to want to see I'd put Eagles and Mac above Dylan, Young and Waters and probably even above The Who as well. They still don't come close to competing with the Stones or McCartney. Overall as a package though, the current East/West coast line ups come across as very, very lightweight when compared to the Desert shows. If they added The Boss, Stevie Wonder and Led Zep then it would be a different matter. Then add David Gilmour and Nick Mason (edit: with Roger Waters)...wow

Default Doobie Brothers

Michael McDonald still isn't performing with them, right? I know he did a one-off recently (w/in the last few years) for some reason...I think...but I don't think he's with them for this. Seeing the rest of the lineup, I'll wait for the next FM tour. I got to see the Eagles 3 times w/Frey...that was enough. No need for Don Henley and friends. As for the groups not selling out stadiums alone, I feel like even with all of these groups together it won't be a sell out. How many people are dying to see Steely Dan and Earth, Wind & Fire ahead of the almost Eagles and FM?

yeah it's interesting what you said about Dylan - and so accurate. he's definitely a huge huge legend and widely respected. yet he barely fills arenas and definitely can't sell them out (of course there's a reason for it, he's crap live). Mac sells out same arenas 3 times that Dylan can't once, even with a solid opening act.

Default Dylan.

Agree to disagree. Dylan is not crap live. Just couldn't let that go unanswered.

I saw him live at UCLA in 1999 and he was great. Joni Mitchell and Van Morrison also played.

Default What a group

The poster for the shows w/Joni and Van were on sale from his website for a long time. It just sounds like the perfect show...if only I had been going to shows when I was 11 :/

I don't ever want to hear/read snarky comments about REO Speedwagon and Pat Benatar ever again.
