I don't think the snippets were a good idea. And if you do that, do it for two weeks, not two months. I didn't listen to any of the snippets myself. I just read everyone's responses to them.

I actually thought the suddenly prominent synths on Wild Heart were quite a jump from the sound on Bella Donna. To me, WH is an album transitioning the sound from BD to RAL.

I know we were making fun of Charles Kelley beforehand, but actually the background vocals on Blue Water are all excellent to me.

What I don't like is Vanessa on Carousel. Her voice is too childlike. You've already got a tinkly, twinkly song. I suppose that's appropriate, because it does put you in mind of a "carousel". But because the music is like those carousel horses, (up and down, up and down and mechanical) then I think the vocals should add gravitas. Stevie's deeper, knowing voice does, especially for the "I thought I heard your voice in the thunder" parts. I would like the song a bit darker I guess.

Hello to everyone. This is my first post after much lurking. I came across this response from Mabel Normand's estate to Stevie's song and found it interesting. I think they are a little off base, but it was interesting to read nonetheless. Nice to break my silence.

Here is the text:

Normand family estate comments on the Stevie Nicks interview
Stephen Normand’s statement on the interviews/articles regarding Stevie Nicks:

My great aunt Mabel Normand (my grandfather’s sister) died of tuberculosis.Though I am grateful Ms Nicks found Mabel as her lifesaver, presently there isn’t documented proof of cocaine addiction.Whatever documentary Ms Nicks watched was/is based on hearsay.Any sanatorium stays aunt Mabel experienced were for tuberculosis and pneumonia. Mabel Normand’s septum was without a hole as Ms Nicks herself suffered.Rather than living on in the memory of the song written & named “Mabel Normand” by Stevie Nicks. My great aunt Mabel is Immortalized in the rather more tasteful Broadway Musical score of MACK & MABEL by the legendary Jerry Herman. Mabel Normand I would agree with Ms Nicks was beautiful, talented, rich, sophisticated and the premiere comedienne of the Silent Screen. Mabel was also the only woman to direct Charlie Chaplin, had her own film company, one of the first women directors and over 100 films to her credit. Mabel Normand died 23 February 1930 at Pottenger’s Sanitorium of tuberculosis (as on her death certificate) aged 38. Stephen Normand - Archivist of the Mabel Normand Family Estate

Thanks Ensorcled

dont worry.
it's hands down my fave Mac record
it's the only CD i have in the car

Stevie's songs on it are immaculate ... except Silver Girl ... and I don't much care for Say You Will either ... well the end part with the kids is annoying ugh

Thrown Down def needs to be an acoustic staple in EVERY Mac show
it needs to take over Gypsy ... and Gypsy is just the best
can you just IIIIIIIMAGINE this on stage wow

disagree. i don't even think they can be compared since IYD was basically all "new" stuff that we all heard with fresh ears
and 24KG is undergoing some VERY rigorous scrutiny
IYD is good overall ... except for Cheaper Than Free ... and My Heart should have been left alone.
24KG would be better with a few moderate Omissions

I think Mabel Normand and Belle Fleur are awful.
disagree. these are probably 2 of the better songs on there

Quote:
I think Hard Advice and I Don't Care are kind of 50% awful.
more like 90% ... get rid of these and the album is nearly perfect. song listing wise.

I consider Carousel and Cathouse Blues playful filler. Carousel is singsongy and I don't see why it hasn't gotten as much flack as Every Day or Too Far From Texas.

Michele
i like Cathouse Blues. but i wouldn't be bothered if either of these were scrapped.
then the tracklisting is A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Starshine
The Dealer
Mabel Normand
Blue Water
24 KG
Lady
All the Beautiful Worlds
Belle Fleur
If You Were My Love
Watch Chain
Twisted
She Loves Him Still

I was just thinking of that end SYW part with the kids when I was writing about Vanessa's voice on Carousel.

I didn't see a reviews thread (not our reviews but media reviews):

Boston Globe likes it a lot and considers "Blue Water" an essential track http://www.bostonglobe.com/arts/musi...XtI/story.html

He was very respectful and was just protecting his Great Aunt's legacy. He just wanted to get the record straight. Nothing in Stevie's song refers directly to cocaine abuse, but she has talked about it in terms of how aspects of Mabel's life mirrored hers. Typically, Stevie's interpretation is slightly off when it comes to facts.

How amazing that a distant relative came out of nowhere! I wonder if Stevie will ever know of it. Since all of Mabel's films were silent, I'm curious to know if any recordings of her talking voice exist.
