Cover songs
So, I've come across a lot of cover songs in the past, but most of them suck. So I was wondering what covers have yall heard that are actually good?
I'd say Ari Hest's cover of "Little Lies" is my favorite. And then some guy on YouTube covered Stand Back, and I like the way he changed it up and did an acoustic version of it.

I just recently watched Ari Hest's cover of Little Lies and I actually loved what he did with it even though I usually believe you don't mess with gems or masterpieces, and leave well enough alone. It was a new take on that song and something Lindsey and Stevie could do up on stage, toned down and simplified just like Ari's version (since Chris isn't there). I think that would sound great and totally surprise us fans and most of us would fall over from hearing the song.

I have not liked, generally, any Fleetwood Mac covers that I've heard.
The Cranberries version of GYOW wasnt too bad... and I liked some of the stuff on Camper Van's version of Tusk

See I never thought the Cranberries sounded good live. And that's only from watching them on tv ever. You don't think Stevie and Lindsey could do a stripped down version of Little Lies like Ari Hest did and it go over well with fans? Cause I do. I think it'd be a hit with them!

I like Annie McLoone's 1976 version of Spare Me a Little.

Not really, because it's a Christine McVie vocal.

I still really like Sister Hazel's version of Gold Dust Woman, a dozen years on.

I love that cover version. It's by far the best song on the Legacy album and I still listen to it regularly. For a great Mac cover though then check out Nora O'Connor's version of That's Alright from her album 'Til The Dawn. Also Sara Watikins' Steal Your Heart Away.

I love this cover. I'm a huge fan of Nickel Creek, and now Sara's solo stuff, too.
Also like the Smashing Pumpkins' Landslide, but I can't stand the Dixie Chicks version. Which is weird, cause I'm a bluegrass freak. I think they just missed the point of the song. |

Big wave to a fellow Nickel Creek fan! Have you heard their version of Toxic? Trust me, go with it...

[Kool Kovers blog 3/15/2014, by Bill Sammon About Kottke's cover of World Turning]
http://koolkovers.blogspot.com/2014/...d-turning.html Another artist who feels a kinship with unusual rhythms is the widely acknowledged master of the 12 string guitar, Leo Kottke. I first heard his astounding work in the early 70's, in an ad for a show he was playing at a local Folk-oriented coffeehouse in suburban Philadelphia known as The Main Point. Kottke's guitar playing sounded to me like it was everywhere, yet right there at the same time. His technique and skill were such that the sound he created was nothing short of arresting. Much of Kottke's work is instrumental, though he has recorded many noteworthy vocals. His discography is extensive, to say the least, and is spread out over multiple decades and record labels. The concept of compiling a cross-label, comprehensive boxed set of Leo's recordings would be daunting. Nonetheless, Leo is the rare sort of skilled musician where the popularity of one of his recordings over another is a poor barometer of the quality contained therein. There's plenty of gold to be found. As a comparison to Kottke's seeming reluctance to sing, which can be construed as his saying that his instrument is more eloquent than himself, Kottke's music is its own best definition. Leo Kottke is best heard, rather than described second hand, as attempts at description of his music are often futile. Suffice it to say, as I already have, that he is a master musician. If you enjoy acoustic music at all, and acoustic guitar in particular, you owe it to yourself to look into the world of Leo Kottke. From Leo's 1997 album, "Standing In My Shoes", here is his version of "World Turning". Enjoy. |
