Default Rumours in Australia back on charts

Rumours fly for Fleetwood Mac
Updated: 12:10, Monday May 23, 2011

Legendary rockers Fleetwood Mac have made a shock return to the Australian music charts, with their highest-selling record Rumours re-emerging at number two on the albums chart, 34 years after its original release.

The surprise comeback follows the Australian premiere of a Fleetwood Mac-inspired episode of the musical drama Glee, which aired on Network Ten last Wednesday night.

The Grammy Award-winning album has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide since its release in 1977, and has been certified thirteen-times platinum in Australia.

It is the first time in more than a year the album has featured on the ARIA charts.

But the group's lead singer, Stevie Nicks, has not seen as much success with her solo album In Your Dreams, which hangs back at number 32, a week after its debut.

Either way, Fleetwood Mac's new-found popularity was not strong enough to push UK songstress Adele from the top spot.

AUSTRALIAN ALBUMS CHART

1(1) 21 - Adele (XL/INE)

2 - Rumours - Fleetwood Mac (WAR)

3(2) Roy - Damien Leith (SME)

4(7) The Wombats Proudly Present... This Modern Glitch - The Wombats (14F/WAR)

5(6) Wasting Light - Foo Fighters (RCA/SME)

6(4) Doo-wops Hooligans - Bruno Mars (ATL/WAR)

7(8) Teenage Dream - Katy Perry (CAP/EMI)

8(15)Who You Are - Jessie J (UNI/UMA)

9(-) Give Till It's Gone - Ben Harper (VIR/EMI)

10(19)Loud - Rihanna (DEF/UMA)

Fleetwood Mac Threaten Adele On This Week’s Charts
By Andrew Tijs
4 hours ago (Mon, 23 May 2011 11:41:07 +1000)
The reissue of Fleetwood Mac’s classic Rumours almost trumps Adele on this week’s ARIA Chart.

Despite the album already going platinum thirteen times over, it seems that there are some people in this country who don’t have a copy of Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours – probably tweenage Glee fans who heard the classics in a recent episode.

Either way, the reissue was the only thing threatening Adele’s continued dominance at the top of the ARIA Charts, as it rocketed back from obscurity into second spot.

Stevie Nicks Starts Rumours Flowing
By Paul Cashmere
Tue, 10 May 2011 12:32:03 +1000
The release of the first Stevie Nicks album in 10 years has resurrected sales for the Fleetwood Mac ‘Rumours’ album.

Nicks ‘In Your Dreams’ is the first album of solo material from Stevie since ‘Trouble In Shangri-La’ from 2001. It is expected to debut in the Top 5 this week. Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 classic ‘Rumours’ will be around the top 20.

‘Rumours’ is one of the biggest selling albums of all-time. It is estimated to have sold around 40 million worldwide.

The album was Fleetwood Mac’s 11th album but second to feature Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham, formerly the duo Buckingham Nicks.

‘Rumours’ was made in a drug-fuelled haze and personal break-ups between the members of the band. The McVies, John and Christine, ended their 8-year marriage during the recording. Buckingham and Nicks also ended their relationship and Stevie had a fling with Mick Fleetwood. This part of Fleetwood Mac’s history reads like a soap opera.

The songs from the album reflected the situations. Nicks’ ‘Dreams’ is about a breakup, Buckingham was much more direct in his lyrics when he wrote ‘Go Your Own Way’ and ‘Never Going Back Again’’ while Christine McVie told all about her affair with the lightening guy in ‘You Make Loving Fun’.

The Stevie Nicks ‘In Your Dreams’ album will sell around 17,000 units this week and debut at no.5. Fleetwood Mac ‘Rumours’ has sold around 7000 and should come in at around 20.

Fleetwood Mac #2 on the ARIA Albums chart
23 May 2011

by Nathan Jolly

Rumours, Fleetwood Mac's most commercially successful (and best) album is still paying dividends, after an episode of Glee bumped the album to #2 on the ARIA Albums chart.

The 1977 album was only held off the top spot by the juggernaut that is Adele, whose album 21 has held the top spot for four weeks.

Rumours was recorded during a tumultuous time in the band's personal lives, with Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham separating, and John and Christine McVie divorcing. In addition to this, Mick Fleetwood was in the process of divorcing his wife.

The personal tensions made for a classic album, which has sold over $40 million copies to date. It has sold twelve times Platinum in Australia, with sales of over 850,000 copies.
