Now, i'm not referring to you personally, you are just one in a long line of "hiders". I donnow, maybe it's just me, but when someone introduces himself/herself online, i expect to know his/her gender, age, name... these kinda things. i find it a little impolite that there are ppl here who would post daily, yet won't reveal even the most general details about who they are.

Hey Tommer thanks for the welcome

You're very to the point which is great but I'm ambivalent about your post. I understand the need for personalised information but I find it unnecessary to know these things. My name, age, and gender say nothing about the decency of my character or what makes me tick.

One of the things that I like about the internet is that age and gender boudaries get broken down allowing us to focus on opinion, statement, and ability. Reading post by post allows me to engage with people's values and thoughts without imposing traditional generalisations upon them - be it conscious or unconscious.

That's nice relief from a world that tends to treat mature-aged people as less employable, teenage opinion as discountable while bestseller books divide the world into venus and mars oppositions.

I recently went to a party and took a friend. When she declared that she liked Michael Jackson she was asked how old she was. She replied "19". She was told "that figures..".

I really don't understand that comment because Jackson has fans of all ages. I also found it condescending towards her age.

In short, the 'blending in' you so dislike is what I actually enjoy.

Furthermore, if I had kids - I would encourage caution of disclosing personal information over the internet in ANY environment as friendly and trusting as it is. Hell, I even ask if there is third party disclosure of my email if I have to submit it in a real life situation.

However, in the spirit of sharing.... my name is Rochelle and I'm 32.

Cheers
CP

I do Arts/Law at UQ. In Arts I'm double majoring in Japanese, so I have to do a handful of non-language subjects to make up the degree. The two in which I saw Tokyo Story were 'Issues of Contemporary Japan' and 'Asian Visual Cultures'.

Also, why did you only have to watch the first half?
Each time we could only watch so much of it, due to lesson time, so we only really saw up to about when the grandparents have arrived in the city home, and when the loud sister comes over. The same guy runs most of those Asian cultural courses so that's the reason for the double dose. But by the second time through I knew some of the lines - lol, the old grandmother sitting on the porch while they pack for the city, and the neighbour comes by... The way she says 'Arigaaatou' is so sweet and funny.

Your faves are among mine too. I adore Agassi and am pulling for him to win one more Slam before he retires. Graf was something -- I miss watching her. (And Rafter, too)

I love Capriati... She's a scrapper.

p.s to Tommer

I was trying to think about why you need that information and was wondering whether or not you are a particularly visual person and needed to visualise a sense of the person you were communicating with.

What do you think of Henin-Hardine? I had an issue with her ethic after she refused to acknowledge to the umpire that she put her hand up to stop serve at last years French Open.

I'm going to tonight's centre court matches which will be fun.

I like her well enough. I agree that was not the best sportsmanlike/ethical thing to do. What impresses me is how good she is for her size.

Have fun!! I'm so jealous!!!

i'm not a visual person at all, and i don't see why you need to speculate my motives after i already presented them.
let me try and give you a simple analogy: i think that people who approach me wearing sunglasses indoors are pompous asses, and i'd never give them the time of day. if you wanna talk to me and expect me to believe that you're frank with me, you do not have to hide your eyes. it's not that i'd think this person would be suspicious or anything, but if you wanna break the distance don't hide, hiding is always a sign of deep mistrust, which is a rude way to present yourself.
the other reason as i mentioned b4 is the cliche'-ness, everyone here are mac fans, and it's hard to remember so many stevie nicknames and avatars (and of course i don't refer chris martin), that's on the practical side, no judgement there, it's just harder to identify and remember users this way (kids, don't do too much drugs! )
