If you smile at me, I will understand 'Cause that is something everybody everywhere does In the same language I can see by your coat, my friend You're from the other side There's just one thing I got to know Can you tell me please, who won the war ? Say, can I have some of your purple berries? Yes, I've been eating them for six or seven weeks now Haven't got sick once Probably keep us both alive Wooden ships on the water, very free and easy Easy, you know the way it's supposed to be Silver people on the shoreline, let us be Talkin' 'bout very free and easy Horror grips us as we watch you die All we can do is echo your anguished cries Stare as all human feelings die We are leaving, you don't need us Go, take your sister then, by the hand Lead her away from this foreign land Far away, where we might laugh again We are leaving, you don't need us And it's a fair wind blowin' warm Out of the south over my shoulder Guess I'll set a course and go

I think that what Lorde said pretty much put paid to Grace.
The Rolling Stones seem to have broken the age barrier for men, and are still getting good reviews. Stevie and Christine now appear to be doing the same for women. More power to them. It's true they came joint third on the Forbes list for successful female artists this year. Only Katy Perry and Taylor Swift were ahead. FM managed to beat Lady Gaga and Beyonce, and Madonna wasn't in the top 10. Women in the business are judged so harshly. It's a shame that they didn't do something better with Grace in the 1980s. She quite clearly regrets and is bitter about the whole experience with Starship. Some artists do age better than others as performers. I think that Madonna should have quit awhile ago. I still have her Ray Of Light album, which I thought showed some signs that she may be maturing and she seemed to have found more vocal range. But it didn't last. Her only medium is high energy pop and no matter how fit you are it's difficult to keep going with that past a certain age. I don't think that Christine would have had much work done - certainly not as much as Madonna - but she looks remarkable for her age of 72. Based on her recent form, I think that Stevie will continue for awhile longer. |

I thought weebles wobble but they don't fall down?..Regarding Grace I think she had one of the great and unique female voices in rock ..I'd put her right there with Stevie for having that intangible quality .I think there may be some professional jealousy though. After starting strong Grace did not really seem to know what to do with herself like Stevie did..so Stevie was able to take it farther than Grace.

So has Stevie. But Stevie seems to have chosen her drs well.] Chris is looking even better now than she did at the start of the tour, and if I were a betting person I'd bet she's been hooked up with talented hair/makeup/clothing/cosmetic touch ups people by Stevie. That's not a criticism; I'd love to know who Stevie uses....

Well her form would make me think she's a weeble wobble.
But if she falls down - we know she's not. Kind of like her own Turing Test. |

I saw Fleetwood Mac in 2004 and last month. Actually thought that Stevie looked and sounded better this time. She's always had poor vision and hurt her foot this year. But she was still wearing those heels. (I am in my 40s and couldn't walk in those heels let alone dance in them!)
Madonna needs to be able to dance and still do heavy choreography. That's what people expect of her. She can't stay in one spot and do a ballad while still keeping people entertained. But Stevie is able to do so. Australians are very critical of and have high expectations of live performers. The reviews here were generally good. The audiences here were very pleased. Christine and Stevie have likely both had lifts but haven't overdone it. They're not chasing something unrealistic. Christine is a no nonsense woman and not the type to fuss over her looks 24/7. If you have good skin it all helps. Stevie's recent comments seem to indicate that she wants to continue. Incidentally (I hope people don't find this disrespectful) a friend of mine saw FM more than 30 years ago and said it was one of the worst shows she had ever been to due to very poor performances. I think this was when everyone in the band was really messed up. I saw a video from that era and looks fairly much as my friend described - very sub standard. In some ways I think they may be better now, because they take better care of themselves. Last edited by Missy; 11-28-2015 at 03:38 PM.. |

^^^ I agree. As much as I criticize the old witch. LA Forum 2014 shows (3).. some of the best Gold Dust Woman I've ever seen and heard. I felt Sisters was a bit flat, but her voice was the strongest of the three.
She does not take any risks with her range; but, she's still doing it. And I don't think she or any of the other members look awful. I thought they looked amazing! Go MAC!

What happened with Starship was this.
After 1984's Nuclear Furniture Paul Kanter left and then sued the other members to stop them from using the Jefferson Starship name. They were going to call themselves Starship Jefferson but settled on Starship. They recorded one album 1985's Knee Deep In The Hoopla which spawned two number 1 hits (We Built This City and Sara). After this album and tour Bassist Pete Sears left claiming he was embarrassed by the whole corporate rock thing they were doing now. The others continued on releasing 1987's No Protection with the number 1 hit Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now. During the tour Grace got sick with an ailment where she could not move part of her body so dates got cancelled. In 88 Slick left the band and the remaining three recorded Wild Again for the movie Cocktail and then cut a new album in 89 called Love Among The Cannibals with a top 20 hit called It's Not Enough. During that tour Donny Baldwin the drummer and singer Mickey Thomas got into a big fight at a tour stop in Scranton, PA and Mickey's Face was busted up badly. Donny got fired and dates were rescheduled. By 91 the band had released a GH album and their manager announced the band was over. Two Years later Mickey resurrected the name calling it Mickey Thomas Starship and now called Starship featuring Mickey Thomas. They still tour but the venues are small state fairs casinos rib fests corn roasts etc. Mickey is the only member still in the band from their heyday. He has a back up band and a girl singer who sings Grace's songs. In 2013 they released a new CD called Loveless Fascination. In 87-88 Members of Jefferson Airplane/Starship were performing in a side band project and invited Grace to play on stage in 88. This led to a reunion of the Jefferson Airplane in 89 for a one off album and tour. The album was a not a big seller but the tour was a success. In 1990 Grace retired and only occasionally has done anything musically. This includes recording backing vocals to a song on a Linda Perry album, rejoining Jefferson Starship twice to perform once in 96 and once in 2001. In 2008, Slick contributed vocals to the hidden track (actually a previously unreleased 1970 outtake featuring Slick, Paul Kantner and Jack Traylor) of the latest Jefferson Starship release, Jefferson's Tree of Liberty. In 2010, Slick co-wrote Edge of Madness with singer Michelle Mangione to raise money for remediation efforts following the BP Oil Spill.[ Grace said the reason she stayed in the 80's was that she felt guilty for what she did in the 70's (showing up drunk being late or missing concerts etc) so she felt she owed them. The people behind Starship felt they needed to continue the hits that Jefferson Starship had so they brought in outside writers to give them hit singles. I will say that some of the Starship music was awful but some of it was not that bad. There was much worse in the 80's IMO |

There were also others who had their bad moments in the 80s, not just Grace. After 1985 Stevie went into a personal and creative slump that lasted about a decade due to the Klonopin. There was a time when I thought she was really finished. Then she managed to kick that drug and was lucky to get a sort of cultural revival in the post-grunge era.
If there was a time when I thought Stevie looked awful I think it was the mid to late 1980s, by which time it was obvious that there was something terribly wrong and no amount of makeup or big hairdo could hide it. I far prefer her now. |

I think all things considered the MAC is looking great - and when you are still selling out venues, keep it going as long as you can.

I agree with Gtace Slick
I have read the article and I agree. I don't even think they sound all that good. The shows are rushed and lack emotional and psychological vigor. It was hard to get through The Dance Reunion Tour. I couldn't resist ...I had to give them one more look and was highly disappointed !!! I never thought I would see the fastest I actually had to leave a show because it was hot that bad. It is sad but when Grace Slick said "children should be seen and not heard...&...." Old people should be heard and not seen" SHE WAS RIGHT!
