Gypsy....
I was at the AHI benefit in 2000 when Stevie sang “Gypsy” acoustic with Waddy and Lindsey. I remember my whole body shuddered and tears just streamed down my face. I couldn’t say anything, because I was in the grasp of absolute emotion. I cried and cried.
Just recently, I got an MP3 copy of that performance and it just immediately threw me back to that night. The purity of that song is just so…… beautiful. The thing that always gets me is: if I am this affected by this song (especially the AHI version), how in the hell can Stevie sing this song anymore without breaking down??? I mean, it is a testament to her days in San Francisco and her deep friendship with Robin Anderson. I’ve performed emotional songs before and have been choked up. I just don’t know how she does it?!? Standing onstage with that beautiful music- and she’s supposed to sing “I still see your bright eyes…” (which she actually does on this tour- at least when I saw it). It would just make me bawl my eyes out. |

Maybe that's why many folks think she holds back in the live performances of this song.

Gypsy has become one of my three top fav FM songs (the other two are Silver Springs and Sara). I really identify with it, and it has brought me to tears at least once or twice.
At the place I am with my life right now (I'm going through a lot of change-- I hate change) Stevie's brilliant lyrics have really hit the nail, and helped a little. I always feel better if there's a song that describes the way I feel, since music is such a big part of my life. Thank you Stevie.

That banner in your sig line rocks, Lala.
Stevie didn't sing Gypsy for a long time. It is Lindsey's favorite song, so I'm sure he had a lot to do with her singing it. I was moved to tears at the AHI Benefit when I heard that song live for the first time in a very long time. Stevie's strength amazes and inspires me all the time. |

Yesterday I found an MP3 of the AHI performance. OMGosh it's like discovering Gypsy all over again! So beautiful. I love the simple acoustic arrangement. It's a little faster and it's in a better key for my voice
Like I said, I'm really identifying with the song (along with many other Stevie songs) right now because of the change that's going on in my life. Needless to say, I've listened to the AHI version quite a lot in the past 24 hours. I love that it's Lindsey's favorite. Stevie's strength is definately an inspiration to me right now.

It is great. There was Waddy and Lindsey playing acoustics and Carlos was palying the mandolin, I believe.
