Default sounds like FM...

Heard it in the grocery store the other day. Bonnie Raitt's version of Not the Only One. The melody sounds similar to Gypsy and the the rhythm exactly the the same. great song tho.

Wink

That song has never made me think of GYPSY, and I've heard it 1,000 times.

Have to agree. I love Bonnie Raitt (she was amazing live!) but I don't hear the similarity.

Just to indulge my love of categorisation I'd say I definitely prefer her 70s output to her late 80s/90s stuff, as good as some of that is though! I also have my fandom of Binnie to thank for introducting me to John Hiatt. Fantastic!

FM is one of those bands that doesn't seem to have many blatant imitators. I can't recall many songs by other bands where I thought, "that sounds like FM".

One somewhat obscure song that DOES sound a lot like TITN-era FM is a song called "Pick Up The Pieces" by the BoDeans, from their 1987 album "Outside Looking In". The rhythm track is very strongly reminiscent of "Family Man" or "Big Love", and the vocals have a strong similarity to a LB lead with CM harmony. Musically this song would fit right in on TITN, although the lyrics are not something that LB would write. Years later, LB would use almost the exact same rhythm track on "Doing What I Can" on OOTC.

"Pick Up The Pieces" used to get a fair amount of airplay on WXRT in Chicago back in the late 80s/early 90s. A few years ago I was talking to a friend about the BoDeans and mentioned this song...she said "I always thought that was a FM song!"

Me too! He came to my college and did an intimate concert and Q&A (partly because he lives here in Nashville and partly because his son went to MTSU). I went because I loved Bonnie's 'No Business' and 'A Thing Called Love' and I knew he had written them. He was great. I own alot of his albums now.

I don't hear it either...

That whole album by Bonnie Raitt, Luck of the Draw sounds like something Stevie or FM could've done.

It's really very good.
