It wouldn't be far fetched to assume that one day he got up and said "I don't want to do this anymore" in the middle of recording an album or a tour, and Nigel got upset about this (physically perhaps, who knows?).

Nigel did say that they'd been rehearsing (or perhaps he said 'preparing') for a followup to Blues Don't Change and that Peter seemed to be enjoying it...and he was surprised Peter left.

We'll never know. Something went wrong for sure.
