I went to my niece's graduation yesterday afternoon, here in the L.A. area. It was 100+ degrees in the sun. Everyone was miserable. It was hellish. There's a lot to be said for indoor controlled climate.

Oh, mine was miserably hot, too. The air conditioning was broken. That, combined with the bright lights shining on us, body heat from all the people packed together, and the heavy gowns we wore, made it super hellish.

I never attended my own graduation, felt no reason to walk across a stage and receive an EMPTY diploma holder but no diploma...
I had just brought closure to my 'legal issues' and was forbidden to attend high school for the remainder of the year, so I was on 'homebound' for the last 9 weeks of my senior year - It took me ONLY one week to catch up for 9 weeks after my 'guidance counselor' told me MOCKINGLY "You have to come back next year, YOU'LL never catch up with those in your class"...WRONG thing to say to me. I busted my ass and completed all the finals and courses, to only have this 'guidance counselor' and my cool 'homebound instructor' come to my residence and say "You're friends saved you your spot in the order of the classes graduation (I graduated 136 out a small class of about 600) and they want you to attend". I thought to myself "were these the same friends who believe the lies in the newspaper and never once visited me while I was locked up? And if so, how come NONE of these 'friends' arrived to ask me themselves?", so I decided "No, I wont attend...I'm busy." Both my 'guidance counselor' and homebound instructor were in shock, and pleaded with me and let loose with the ol' "This is what you attended school all those years for, to walk across the stage as a graduate". I still said "No, I'm busy". I was BRIBED with $100 to attend and that wasnt going to work because money cant buy beliefs. When my 'guidance counselor' finally asked what I "was busy with that was more important than this once in a lifetime ceremony?" I told her "I'm going to go inside and listen to my music"...and closed the door. I did hear these 2 trying to convince my mother to force me to go, but Mom knew I am very set in my ways and once I made up my mind, "forgettaboutit". I was at school the next morning (May 28,1988) to get my diploma, and once I received it (After being given another's diploma by mistake) I told the office staff (Especially my 'guidance counselor' Mrs.Allen), on my way out the door, to "Go f**k yourselves". I was enrolled in college the very next day...and guess what? I missed that graduation too, and the one I had in technical school too!!!!

I finished three weeks of exams on Friday ... it still hasn't quite sunk in that I'm free yet!!
If I get the grades I need, I'll be off to study Psychology at Trinity College Dublin. Failing that, it'll be Psychology at National University of Ireland, Maynooth. |
