This is going to be really ironic, but Neil Young. He is so heartfelt and poignant Americana that I can't imagine anyone else capturing it the way he does. Kathleen Edwards is another one, and like Neil, she's also Canadian!!

The person I can believe hasn't been mentioned is Elvis Presley. He is the King of Rock n' Roll! He is the beginning, and that is who influenced most of those groups that were mentioned prior to this. He defined American music and culture. Enough said.
