Default A melancholy Christmas...

Today my mom made dinner for me.
And while we were visiting she was busy
making cakes and other goodies for a
Christmas party. She asked me to play
a Elvis Christmas CD while I ate. So while
I was eating she said "I wish your father
and Elvis were still alive". Of course I
felt the same way. Anyway the mood
turned melancholy. Not long after, Elvis'
song "Holly Leaves And Christmas Trees"
came on, and the words just seemed to fit.

Holly Leaves And Christmas Trees

Somewhere in, - in the distant night
I hear Christmas bells
The gentle snow keeps falling down on people
Who are homeward bound

That's the way it's always been
The circle never really ends
Christmas seems to come and go
From the place that I don't know

Holly leaves and Christmas trees
It's that time of year
Lights aglow and misletoe
Don't mean a thing when you're not here

As I walk this lonely street
The sound of snow beneath my feet
I'll think how it use to be
Holly leaves and Christmas trees
Use to mean so much to me

Holly leaves and Christmas trees

This thread isn't to bring anyone's feelings
down. It's just a reminder that most of us
have stories like this about those we miss.
It seems to hit harder around the holidays
for most of us I think.

Anyone care to share a similar story?

The Angels Cried

They came from near, they came from far
Following a distant star to where he'd lay
Not being sure of what it meant
But knowing it was heaven sent, they made their way

And the creatures gathered round
And didn't make a sound and the angels cried

The angels knew what was to come
The reason God had sent His Son from up above
It filled their hearts with joy to see
And knowing of His destiny, came tears of love

And the creatures gathered round
And didn't make a sound and the angels cried

I've often thought about that night
And wondered if they realized that star so bright
Was sent to tell all the land
The Son of God would soon become the Son of Man

And the creatures gathered round
And didn't make a sound and the angels cried
And the angels cried
And the angels cried

Thanks for making this thread! This song has made me cry from the first day I heard it. This is kind of a heavy thing, but it's the song I was listening to when I found out my sister passed, 2 years ago this Sunday.. I would like to take this moment to dedicate it to her and it is in my hopes that the angels are taking care of her.

A picture she photo shopped of herself:

Christmas is always hard, but at the same time it is so magical that I know she's still with me so I can still enjoy it nevertheless, God wanted to celebrate it with her more, I suppose.

I was listening to this song when I found out that my Nanna had died. Pretty ominous really, and four years on I still can't listen to it without crying. We didn't have the best of relationships, in the sense that she always favoured my cousin over me. We barely spoke as I was never made to feel welcome. But even still, I had the option to go to the hospital and say good bye to her before she went and I didn't take it. The choice I made still haunts me. The night she died I wrote a letter to her about my feelings and sealed it up, putting it in my memory box. I'm not sure that I'll ever open it.

Jane Syberry - Calling All Angels.

Santa Maria, Santa Teresa, Santa Anna, Santa Susannah
Santa Cecilia, Santa Copelia, Santa Domenica, Mary Angelica
Frater Achad, Frater Pietro, Julianus, Petronilla
Santa, Santos, Miroslaw, Vladimir
and all the rest

a man is placed upon the steps, a baby cries
and high above the church bells start to ring
and as the heaviness the body oh the heaviness settles in
somewhere you can hear a mother sing

then it's one foot then the other as you step out onto the road
how much weight? how much weight?
then it's how long? and how far?
and how many times before it's too late?

calling all angels
calling all angels
walk me through this one
don't leave me alone
calling all angels
calling all angels
we're cryin' and we're hurtin'
and we're not sure why...

and every day you gaze upon the sunset
with such love and intensity
it's almost...it's almost as if
if you could only crack the code
then you'd finally understand what this all means

but if you could...do you think you would
trade in all the pain and suffering?
ah, but then you'd miss
the beauty of the light upon this earth
and the sweetness of the leaving

calling all angels
calling all angels
walk me through this one
don't leave me alone
callin' all angels
callin' all angels
we're tryin'
we're hopin'
we're hurtin'
we're lovin'
we're cryin'
we're callin'
'cause we're not sure how this goes

^^Ah, I loved me some Jane Siberry back in the day. I just don't know what happened to Jane... or Issa... or whatever the eff she is calling herself today. It seems like she either had a mental collapse... or awakening... not sure. I can't say that I love her newer music, but I am absolutely fascinated by her life. She is that rare artist that literally lives for her music, rather than fame or fortune. Eccentric doesn't even begin to describe it. The proof? She is literally giving all of her music away for free: http://www.janesiberry.com/janesiberry/music.html . I highly, highly recommend Bound by the Beauty, When I Was a Boy, and The Walking. The only album of hers not up there is City, but I suspect it's a legal issue (it was a duets album). Anything after 1995 is not for the faint of heart.
