I totally forgot about MJ! I love his stuff, but I do have a very contreversial (sp?) opinion about him: I like Bad more than Thriller.

I've gotten into '40s-'60s country music quite a bit. Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Sons of the Pioneers, Ray Price, Kitty Wells, etc. Lots of blues and jazz. Billie Holiday is probably my favorite singer, ever. Not as much of a die-hard Joni Mitchell fan as I was a few years ago, but she's still one of my faves as well. Don't go in much for hard rock or punk.

He was adorable as a kid, especially with that little for and everything. TBH, I think he had a deeper voice as a kid than as an adult lol.

MJ 80s: Triumph > Bad > Thriller > Victory

Solo: Blood on the Dance Floor > HIStory > Off The Wall > Dangerous > Bad > Invincible > Thriller

And just to be clear: Thriller IS great. But I think it's probably his least great solo album. . . as album.

Oh and as for his voice: I think MJ was the greatest singer who ever lived.

I think Thriller is great too, and I love Beat It, but Bad has so many more kickass songs, like Smooth Criminal, Dirty Diana, and Man in the Mirror.

I can't even begin to list them all, so I'm going to try to list the very cream of my (very) personal crop and off the top of my head:

The Smiths / Morrissey
Roxy Music / Bryan Ferry
Talking Heads / David Byrne
The Beatles
Pet Shop Boys
Public Enemy
New Order / Electronic / Bad Lieutenant / rewind: Joy Division
Scritti Politti
Kate Bush
Associates / Billy Mackenzie
Michael Jackson / The Jacksons / Jackon 5
Iris Dement
Elvis Costello (1977-1986)
The Rolling Stones
Prince
Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band / Kid Creole & The Coconuts
Erasure / Yazoo
Chic
De La Soul
Donna Summer
The Wedding Present / Cinerama
The Clash
Bruce Springsteen
Neil Young
Sex Pistols / Public Image, Ltd. / John Lydon
Sex Pistols / Malcom McClaren
Saint Etienne / Sarah Cracknell
Diana Ross & The Supremes
The Isley Brothers
Marvin Gaye (& Tammi Terrell)
X
Au Pairs
Smokey Robinson
Aretha Franklin
(lol apparently I saved the two greatest living singers for last :-/)

What I need to do most is explore and really geek out on more pre-1977 music.

I agree. I also think it's as a cohesive album (even though it began the MJ problem of being a li'l tooo long--only Blood on the Dance Floor is perfect in every way--and talk about KICKASS SONGS!)

OT, but I sent you a PM.

That aside, MJ does indeed rule.

Since you wanna check out more pre-1977 music, ever listen to The Who? They're a great classic rock band and were great before 1977 (cause in 1978, they made that atrocity Who Are You, Keith Moon died, and it was all downhill from there).

I only know the film Tommy, which I love (watch for my upcoming book which features a "chapter" on the film!)

In another MJ aside: one of my best friends in the whole world (and hero) self-published a book about MJ that is really worth reading for anyone interested in enriching the MJ experience.

Tommy is a good film, and I got a kick out of the look on Roger Daltrey's face during his blind parts, but I recommend checking out The Who's other stuff, such as Who's Next and Quadrophenia
