Below is the copy of post I made on the rollingstone.com link. I think there are some unrealistic expectations floating around this board for a 2 disc set of previously released material...

12 is an absolutely phenomenal debut. You need to understand this a double album of all previously released material from a group that is not current by music standards. 1997 is a long time ago in the music world. It is a greatest hits package and double album. This is an extremly high debut for such a release. Remember the UK is a single disc. Probably the record company has a break even point of 75,000-100,000 copies depending on marketing costs. They, I am sure are thrilled and this far exceeds their expectations. Such a debut will only encourage them to put their full force behind their new release.

I agree...12 is a great debut. I just hope it hangs around the top 20 for a while and doesn't drop off right away. But considering the Greatest Hits, which had two new songs as incentive, only peaked at 14, this hitting #12 I think is good. Just as long as it STAYS up there for a while. Oh, and by the way, I FINALLY saw the commercial, which is a good commercial, and it's also good that they are still promoting the Best Of, if even just a little bit, after the first week of sales.
