Default It only took me 22 years to like Love Changes

I always completely disregarded this song. In fact, I would have struggled to think of how it even goes. The verses are almost spoken word, they have so little melody. But I have been listening to Trouble in Shangri La for the first time in a long time, and all the sudden I realized it's a pretty interesting song.

Am I crazy - this is almost a dance track, in a very subtle way. Probably too subtle. I think what kept me from recognizing it is when the guitar kicks in during the chorus, at that point it's just an ordinary song. Elsewhere, there are many interesting little sounds. If the atypical aspects of the song had been fully embraced instead of compromising them, I think it would have been better.

What are your thoughts on this song?

I have loved this song from the first time I heard Shangri-la! I love the bass & the very simple keys (I often wondered if it was Stevie, forgotten if I've ever looked it up). I love her vocals on the last verse, when they get kind of hush-y. And the "that don't mend the sorrow, or reinvent the pleasure" build up/fade-out ending is cool!! I only wish they had gotten better vocals on the chorus.. she sounds a bit mono-tone, even slightly off key at times!

Longtime fan of this song. It’s one of the few on the album that isn’t overproduced, IMO. The lyrics are solid - very Stevie, but judicious, not the word salad that some of her later stuff becomes. Her vocal on the verses sounds like the Stevie of old - feathery and pliant. (I agree with The Chain that the chorus vocals could’ve used more work.) And yes, Stevie plays keys, giving it some of the charm and spontaneity of her demos.

I really like it! I see it as part of the 'Lindsey/Dance tour' songs (Fall From Grace, the title track, Thrown Down)

The production kind of killed it for me. All those blips and bleeps during the verses just aren't right for her sound. But I thought the original demo was great.

I always thought the lyric was ”that dont mend sorrow or end that depression.” Cool!

I’ve always liked it since 2001. Was the first single, right?

My favorite on the album is “It’s Only Love” by a long shot, followed distantly by “I Miss You,” and then followed by “Candlebright.” But the entire album has a nice flow with a variety of songs: country, ballad, rock and roll, funk, mystical power ballad.

I have a very strange relationship to this song. I was in a romantic relationship with someone from 2010-2015. We are still VERY good friends and work out much better as friends and by 2013 it was kind of obvious it was not going to work out romantically. Every time I would play TISGL out loud I would get so uncomfortable and have to skip this song and for the longest time I couldn't stop and analyze it. Sometimes the lyrics made me think about how I felt, sometimes I would worry they were how he felt.

Sorry but I still think of this every time I listen to the song!

This may be one of the longs that affects me most!

The vocal doesn't sound integrated with the music.

And the music itself is a little boring, the drums (or drum machine?) particularly so.
