Default Question about Sig Lines?why so Many?

I just wondered why some of y'all have so many sig lines. I thought the purpose of a sig line was one concise thought that sums up how you feel about life, or the Mac or something. Does anyone think it makes reading posts more difficult? You gotta scrrrrolllllllllll down through 234 quotes (how many times are we gonna read 'em?) to get to the next message. And if that person or persons has contributed a lot to a thread, you gotta see all those tad-burn quotes over and over and over. Please don't flame me, I just don't see the point of 1,239 sig lines. :::::::crawling away in shame and putting flame retardent panties on::::::

It can be annoying if there are more than 3. Too many lines and I don't think anybody reads them, it's just a pain scrolling past them. If you want to get more in then ROTATE them regularly

A sig is basically a fetish; it doesn't serve a practical purpose. It isn't there for the reader; it just gives the poster a psychologically satisfying feeling. I use sigs all the time when I post to Usenet. I enjoy varying them every few weeks & shocking or entertaining the few people who read them, but I can't really explain my enjoyment except just to say it's a pleasant mental buzz.

Sigs that are extremely long are one of many examples of rudeness on the Internet. When you post something, you are soliciting someone's attention. You're saying, "Stop what you're doing & read what I have to say." If you do that, it behooves you to abide by the community's codes of behavior (on the Internet it's called netiquette). Forcing people to scroll past a sig that's too long so that they can read what the person after you has to say is an especially egregious rudeness common among younger or newer Internet users. Among the rude activity on the Net, I'd rank the lengthy sig well below (i.e., worse) that of an average insult -- which is at least over & done with in a matter of seconds -- but really horrific flaming by a psychopath is just about the worst (except for carpet-bombing a newsgroup or spreading a computer virus).

I doubt there's any remedy for any of this rude activity, like sigs that are lengthier than most posts. People who don't care about other people on the Internet are quite intransigent & even belligerent with their rudeness, & most have no intention of changing. More & more, your only options are to use killfiles, ignores, or just to suffer -- at least as long as you continue to use the Net.

that would be a very good idea. But I guess people are very attached to their sig lines and wouldn't want to just put one or two on, and then save the others for another time. A friend of mine says it's totally mental to have more than one sig line. I could go for two or three though. More than that's just dumb in my opinion

yeah that's what I mean. It's like you scroll down through 20 feet of Stevie junk, and then all the next person (who has 14 feet of Lindsey junk quoted) says is "Oh" or "I agree". Oh well, thanks for the 411.

Cool Thank you

...for bringing up what I had previously posted in another thread, although not nearly as politely as you did.

We get a huge kick, here, out of scro-o-o-o-o-oling down and down and down these interminably somnambulistic sigs, only to arrive at another post (with another 40 + line sig) that reads something like, "Thank you. I agree!" Geez!

David said it best: It's appallingly rude ...and the general reaction by those who use these nasty things is...well, just SO adolescent. I was all ready to get into a snit...and the damned thing disappeared. Hm. I guess I'll have to get worked up about something else. But thanks, you two. Well said.

Just to clarify things I am not saying that anyone with more than a couple sig lines should walk around with a sign that blinks "UNBALANCED LOAD" on their foreheads. I would like to leave that observation to someone else! But it does seem a little weird to have to decorate your posts with acres of self expressive, colored and flashing/scrolling and blinking stuff. It's the post to the thread that tells us who y'all really are and what you're thinking. Hey! Maybe I should wear an "unbalanced load" sign on my head. This is just an observation from yours truly. Seems it would lessen ban width problems, too??? I dunno.

Cool In total agreement

I have always asked myself that very same question... it really slows things down... And sometimes it can be really annoying. So I basically agree with all the things that have been said and will try to use little space to post my feelings about this.

Needless to say, Cristian, I love your pic of Christine. And you have a very punchy, funny sig line! That to me is what a sig is all about.

Cool Why thanks...

...it's actually a line from The Simpsons.

And the picture... she does look beautiful in there, doesn't she? Good to know you also admire Chris in the same way I do... you should know that "heroes are hard to find"

Good point chickenhack.

What really annoyed me was when they had to close the ChitChat forum caause of bandwidth issues, when I'm sure the problem could've been solved if some Ledgies (no names mentioned!) cut down their 'sigs'.

Remember - sigs are bad for your health!

I also prefer to choose a short lyrical quote, or phrase... something that strikes me at that moment. And periodically, I change it.

Sometimes, if it's a lyric that I feel strongly about, I'll come back to it more than once, or leave it up for a while... though I imagine that most people only read them once, and then not again.

I agree with Mick's comments on the 'Making of Rumours' video, in regards to the production of "Oh Daddy"....
"Less is more."
