Say You Love Me and Sugar Daddy
Does anyone besides me think that those 2 songs sound(musically) eerily similar?

SYLM has a faster tempo..... I can see how the intro key riff might sound a tad similar, but other than that, I don't really hear it.

Never noticed before about them sounding similiar, being in the same key will partly cause that.
Both are two of my favorite Mac/Christine songs. |

They're both in the same key and mode. I have no idea why the band never tried Sugar Daddy live. It would have made for fun pub-style blues. All we have is the studio track--and it's dynamite. Her voice is so convincing!
As for Say You Love Me, well, that song is one of my favorite songs, not only within this band but by any band. It's so clever and simple at the same time. I remember first hearing those opening piano chords and feeling genuine excitement. She sings it so well. And when the other two voices join in on the chorus it's a slice of heaven. Side note: When I joined The Ledge over ten years ago, I didn't realize we could pick a member name that wasn't an email. If I had known, I'd have gone with Sugardaddy. |

Does that mean that at this point in time you feel like you are a sugar daddy?

Nah! I just love the boldness of it. The bawdiness of it. And I also love to stand behind a song so few ledgies actually seem to like.

You were right on; it's one of her most incendiary songs (by Christine's somewhat conservative standards). In dreamland I hear them playing the song live and extending that jazzy-ish middle instrumental section into a long jam, sort of in the manner of the Grateful Dead. It has that kind of cool, bouncy sustainable vibe.

I think when people say the two songs sound alike, it's more than just the fact they're both in A. What people are hearing is the two piano parts, which are in the same style. When Chris played "Station Man" in concert, that arrangement (also in A) was similar to "Say You Love Me" and "Sugar Daddy." When Chris is playing similar arrangements in similar tempos, it sounds like the same song—like "Songbird" and "The Way I Feel."
