Default Heads Kicked In

This is from a review of Joe Perry's new album in L. A. Weekly

http://www.laweekly.com/events/the-j...roject-719165/

About the only drawback is a surprisingly wimpy remake of early Fleetwood Mac guitarist Jeremy Spencer's "Somebody's Gonna Get (Their Head Kicked in Tonite)," which sounds creaky and doddering next to the Rezillos' definitive version.

I updated the 2009: The Year In Fleetwood Mac sticky to reflect this.

I'll have to buy it on itunes tonight.

Thanks!

The Rezillos (I think) could best be described as a punk version of the B-52s - they resurrected the song around '78 or '79 inflating the overt threat to cartoon proportions, harnessing a vocal reminiscent of The Trashmen’s immortal ‘Surfin’ Bird’, to the manic pop energy of the Sweet’s ‘Ballroom Blitz’ turning it into a caricature of Spencer's parody.

About a year after the Rezillos recorded it, it was also covered by The Bishops (a.k.a. The Count Bishops), - they were a band with one foot in the burgeoning British punk scene and the other in “pub rock” stylings of Dr. Feelgood.

In the same way that Spencer had performed his Elmore James covers, the Bishop's version was a sincere tribute to the original without being a slavish reproduction; they used a furiously strummed twin guitar attack to back-up the verses along with splashes of piano to add a little color and performed it with the sole intention to get the joint rocking.

You got to this reply before I did, BklynBlue, but the B-52s are exactly the band I would compare the Rezillos with.

There are several fairly recent Rezillos performances of "Somebody's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked in Tonite" on YouTube - just do a search. For a good YouTube clip of The Rezillos in their prime, search for the clip from '78 of them doing "Top of the Pops", their best-known song.

Default Jeremy's contribution to punk

I'm sure that's an achievement he's proud to claim . "The Rezillo's definitive version"!?!? It's a wall of noise. At least Joe Perry was trying to emulate the original idea. The Sex Pistols had "it". The Rezillo's do not have "it".

From an interview with Joe Perry in The Blender Blog, 10-6-09:

http://www.blender.com/blender-blog/...joe-perry.html

Have Guitar, Will Travel includes a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Somebody's Gonna Get (Their Head Kicked In Tonite)." Why that song?

I've been wanting to cover that one forever! We have so many songs we'd like to play live, but you only get so many opportunities to do so... This is one we really wanted to do, so we just up and covered it.

But I wanted to do it in the spirit and style of Gene Vincent. If Elvis was the polished diamond of rock n' roll, Gene was the brass knuckles.

The Australian, by Ian Shedden, May 10, 2014

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/arts...-1226911649966

APROPOS of absolutely nothing I’ve seen on television or in the papers this week, I thought I’d compile my top 10 songs about fighting (although some of them are about different kinds of social interaction), starting with Street Fighting Man by the Rolling Stones. It’s downhill (kicking and scratching all the way) from there, but here it is:

1. Street Fighting Man — the Rolling Stones

2. Rollin’ and Tumblin’ — Muddy Waters

3. TNT — AC/DC

4. Hit Me with Your Best Shot — Pat Benatar

5. Kung Fu Fighting — Carl Douglas

6. Somebody’s Gonna Get Their Head Kicked in Tonight — Fleetwood Mac

7. A Punchup at a Wedding — Radiohead

8. No More Mr Nice Guy — Alice Cooper

9. Ballroom Blitz — The Sweet

10. Beat on the Brat — The Ramones

'Creaky and doddery?' Wow! Seems this reviewer wants more blood and guts. Like KA2, a reflection of the state of current times.

Dear Earl Vince (aka Jeremy Spencer)... (sorry)
I just thought I'd let you know that many people I know (including myself) have a lot of joy from this song by you and the Valiants.
We don't take it seriously at all! It's great fun!!
The background vocals/chatting is hilarious!!! And the part about smashing up the band?!!? Hahahahah....

Have no interest in the cover versions though.

-Daniel
