Gold dust women! Fleetwood Mac's Stevie Nicks and The Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde wow fans on the Sydney leg of their Australian tour

One is the iconic Fleetwood Mac singer while the other has enjoyed a long career as frontwoman for The Pretenders.
And Stevie Nicks and Chrissie Hynde wowed fans at Sydney's international Convention Centre on Tuesday.
The first of two Sydney shows for Stevie's 24 Karat Gold tour, on which she is joined by The Pretenders, saw the duo run through a selection of their respective hits while Chrissie even joined Stevie on stage for a few numbers.

Stevie was a vision in black for the show, clad in a flowing dark dress that kept well with her iconic Bohemian look.
The Gold Dust Woman singer finished her ensemble with a pair of matching fingerless gloves and a pair of suede boots.
She also wore some subtle ear bling and a simple silver pendant around her neck.

In keeping with the boho theme, Stevie's microphone stand was adorned with an array of embellished material.
Chrissie, meanwhile, went for a rockier look in a black Pretenders T-shirt and a pair of figure hugging blue jeans.
While fans may be used to seeing Chrissie with a jet black mane, her hair was a much lighter, blonde colour.

The Brass In Pocket singer also wore a chunky gold necklace and a pair of matching earrings and later added a black overcoat to her outfit.
With a sky blue Fender Telecaster guitar slung over her shoulder, Chrissie looked right at home, beaming broadly as she belted out a slew of Pretenders hits.
Chrissie eventually joined Stevie on stage for a few songs and the pair looked to be having a great time.

The pair seemed chuffed sharing the stage with each other, smiling as they huddled close and enthralled the crowd with their formidable voices.
Stevie also found time to pay tribute to Tom Petty, who suffered a fatal cardiac arrest in October.
As she stood on stage, a large throwback photo showing the pair together filled the screen behind her.

Nicks and Hynde give a lesson in rock
On Tuesday night in Sydney, it was clear time has stood still for two of rock music's biggest talents, Stevie Nicks and Chrissie Hynde.

There is no one cooler than Chrissie Hynde but, to quote a wise woman, "lightning strikes, maybe once maybe twice".

On Tuesday night in Sydney there was no maybe about it, as The Pretenders frontwoman and Stevie Nicks, both on the north side of 65, electrified the crowd in a brilliant double bill at the ICC.

Hynde kicked off with The Pretenders, ditching her sequinned jacket to show a band-branded T-shirt and skinny jeans.

She strutted, snarled, danced and flirted while hitting every note in a strong alto voice belying her 66 years.

The band played Message of Love, Hymn to Her, Back on the Chain Gang, Brass in Pocket and when she started off The Kinks' track Stop your Sobbing in the wrong key she simply re-started, admitting "I f***** it up".

Stevie Nicks' more ethereal approach rounded out the night as she emerged in an array of shawls for a two-and-a-half hour set of songs and stories.
Opening with her 1981 hit Gold and Braid, the 69-year-old celebrated her return to Australia which was possible because of the success of her tour with Hynde.

"Girls can totally get along and work together and it's cool," she said.
By her third song, Nicks tackled the emotionally charged Stop Dragging My Heart Around, written for her by the late Tom Petty, and welcomed Hynde back on the stage to take over his part on the duet.

His presence has hung over the tour, the first shows Nicks has performed since his death last month.

"When I'm talking about Tom, Tom is on the road rocking somewhere," Nicks told the crowd.

The Fleetwood Mac frontwoman let the audience in on all her secrets, telling stories of how Landslide was written alone in an Aspen hotel room in 1973 while she wrote Dreams in Sly Stone's black velvet room in a studio in Sausalito.

She cracked open the vault, performing songs from her 24 Karat Gold album made up of forgotten tracks from her lengthy career, and belted out hits including Gypsy, Dreams, Rhiannon and Gold Dust Woman.

After that performance, it was impossible to agree with her in her final song, Landslide, because Stevie Nicks clearly isn't getting older.

Stevie Nicks review: 'Like wise counsel from an elder sister'

Stevie Nicks' voice is a thing to behold.

The singer, who between Fleetwood Mac and a 36-year solo career has sold more than 140 million records, managed to build an intimate connection with 9000 people inside a convention hall, holding us spellbound for most of the two-and-a-half-hour set.

"I will sing you the story of the moonlight," she sang on a new track, Belle Fleur, with a tone that worked like a balm, like wise counsel from an elder sister after a heartbreak.

She also built rapport with a bunch of stories. The one about her first big solo hit, Stop Draggin' My Heart Around was poignant enough, given the recent death of its author Tom Petty, before the projection of an early-80s photo of the pair together sealed the emotional deal.

Then Chrissie Hynde brought the joy by singing the song with Nicks while sporting a blonde Petty wig. Her Pretenders had earlier pleased the crowd with a no-nonsense, hit-filled opening set.

Nicks' tale of stealing then reinventing Prince's Little Red Corvette for another big hit, Stand Back, packed a similar elegiac punch.

That song, Gold Dust Woman and Edge of Seventeen were highlights of the show, Nicks whirling and rocking harder than anyone on the edge of 70 (the milestone is next May) could be expected to.

But it wasn't perfect. The seven-piece band, led by pre-fame collaborator Waddy Wachtel, is a crack unit but drowned out the unfamiliar lyrics of some newer songs.

And Fleetwood Mac's Rhiannon didn't deserve its rapturous reception – Nicks sang it a little flat and seemed bored by her signature song.

But all was forgiven after a lovely rendition of Landslide closed the night to a standing ovation.

"Time makes you bolder," she sang over picked acoustic guitar. Here's hoping we can all age as gracefully as Nicks.
