Wink Original Art

Anyone a fan of buying original art pieces?

I am in the market to buy my first piece...the original artwork to a book called Kingdom Come. The cost for one cover is about $2000. I was curious to see what other people have paid for one-off pieces, and if its worth the prices!

If you actually enjoy it, it's worth the price.

If you want something to show off and gloat about how much you've paid, it's ridiculous.

That's the good thing about art. You determine its worth to you.

Some people buy Thomas Kinkade prints or canvas (which is more expensive). I myself own the Kinkade "Flags Over the Capital" -- #133 out of 1,991.

I have a few original art prints...I don't think I'd ever really pay $2000 though unless it was something I absolutley had to have...like a Stevie original or something. I'm fairly artistic myself so I'd just as soon make something (read: copy) myself.

the few originals I have really speak to me and I think they all cost between $100-500.

Yeah I guess its worth it. I dont LIKE spending obscene amounts of cash on something like that. But what I mean is...its the original artwork, so its a one-of-a-kind. I suppose then the price is justified.

Yeah I got my wife-2-be an Amy Brown original piece (not a print) and it was only $250.

I used to know someone who was obsessed with collecting original Mark Kostabi paintings, which, at the time were fetching in the 4-to-5-figure range. I'll admit that the paintings were somewhat clever, ironic and whimsical, but I certainly did not think they merited the high price tags. And I did not have the heart to keep reminding this person that Mark Kostabi is actually a horde of people painting under the Mark Kostabi brand (Kostabi even admitted so himself!). And with "original art" you are really buying the provenance to the work moreso than the art for the sake of art. As such, it really is pointless to pay that kind of money for art that has no provenance. And this is probably the case with most of the more popular contemporary artists today. I would be very careful about that.

.......Investing in art is a good thing and if you're buying something original then you expect to pay a bit of a premium.

I collect the work of an artist called Anita Klein - I got the first one for my 21st birthday and have gradually bought more. She's becoming quite popular in the UK now. I have alot of her stuff in my flat in London - mainly black and white drawings, in fact I had my flat redecorated so that it would match the drawings. I also have a few of her oil paintings.

They cost anything from £500 to £10k. I buy the cheaper stuff!!

Here's what it's like - quite simple, but funny, people always ask about them when they see them. Three of these I own the originals and three I'd like to own! Hopefully the last one isn't too risque for the Ledge - I don't want to get banned for posting pornography - it's ART!!!!!!!

I guess photography could be included in that lot...cause I bought two of Neal Preston's rarer prints of Lindsey from The Dance DVD. They were both 16x20, and Neal signed them for me...at the premium of just under a thousand bucks for each one. Eck.

as far as original art. Alex Ross is the guy who illustrated Kingdom Come...his artwork is very distinct. I dont think you could fake it even if you tried...but it seems his originals are fetching $1500+ on the 2nd hand market.
