Default O'Reilly blames millennial at Fleetwood Mac show

BILL O'REILLY BLAMES SOCIALISM, SELFIES AT FLEETWOOD MAC SHOW AFTER BEING UNABLE TO SEE OVER DANCING MILLENNIALS

BY BENJAMIN FEARNOW ON 3/13/19 AT 3:14 PM EDT
00:00

Former Fox News host Bill O'Reilly relayed a bizarre tale of his Baby Boomer experience alongside "narcissistic" millennials and their smartphones during Monday night's sold-out Fleetwood Mac concert at Madison Square Garden.

O'Reilly, 69, posted a video to his personal website Wednesday detailing his shock at how "millennial-generation Z people" stood and danced for the entire 2 hour and 10 minute concert in New York City Monday night. The former top-rated Fox News host tied young Fleetwood Mac fans' narcissistic phone selfies and reckless dancing to the wider embrace of socialism across the country. Portions of O'Reilly's story make it unclear if he has attended concerts before, including his dismay at numerous "confrontations" he said were caused by drunken millennials.

O'Reilly praised singer Stevie Nicks and the rest of the classic rock band's performance, but criticized the "me, me, me, me, me" concert mentality of millennials that he claims prevented some Baby Boomers from being able to see the show while seated. O'Reilly commended the band for being "non-political" but said the large swath of millennial women were likely in attendance because Nicks and bandmate Christine McVie are "feminine icons."

"It occurred to me there's a change happening in America," O'Reilly began. "So the crowd was equally divided between Boomers, Baby Boomers like me, who grew up with Fleetwood Mac. And then millennial, generation Z young people, primarily women, who admire Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie as feminine icons."

"The millennials -- generally speaking but I didn't see one without -- watched the show with this in their hand," O'Reilly said, holding up his smartphone. "It's like they're texting every song and they were taking some pictures but in the Garden it's hard to take pictures...millennials are taking selfies and bending over like pretzels to try to get them and the stage."

O'Reilly then managed to connect the dots between Fleetwood Mac, millennials, smartphones and socialism's spread across the country.

"The music of Fleetwood Mac is classic, it's timeless. And there are some songs where you want to jump up and dance and that's fine. That's fine. But the millennial, generation z people would never sit down. From the time it started until the time it ended they were standing up. There were people behind them, some of these people were 75-80 [years old] and they couldn't see -- and the millennials didn't care."

"I saw confrontations," O'Reilly continued intently, casting doubt on whether he's ever been to a rock concert before. He detailed his involvement in a "confrontation" with a drunken millennial who was distracting O'Reilly and his friends. "I said 'hey sir, you're blocking our vision.' I gave him a look. And then I stood up, all 6 foot 4 of me and he ran away."

"The people who were standing and dancing they couldn't care less about if anybody could see or what they were doing. And some of these people were like gyrating. You know what this is, what this is all about? This is all about narcissism," O'Reilly added, again holding up a smartphone. "And this is what's happening, because this thing is, you know, It's part of your hand, an extension of your body. And if these narc -- if these millennials or gen Z people or whatever -- if they lose this or they don't have it? Well that's big!"

O'Reilly parted ways with Fox News in 2017 after settling sexual harassment claims with several women in 2017. O'Reilly has consistently denied the harassment claims. And in Wednesday's video about his Fleetwood Mac concert experience, he was still pointing blame elsewhere. O'Reilly said Democratic Socialists like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders are not to blame for socialism's spread, but is tied to young people's embrace of narcissism, which he first realized at Monday's MSG concert.

"The younger Americans under 40 are really addicted and so everything is coming through this, it goes 'bing, bing,'" O'Reilly said, touching his phone and then his head. "Everything centers around you. Because people are texting you. Instagram'ing you. Facebook'ing you. Whatever you're doing. You, you, you, you, you. Therefore the mentality becomes, it's all about me. Narcissism."

"I'm telling you this socialism thing, this is what happens. It's not Ocasio-Cortez or Bernie Sanders," O'Reilly concluded. "It's give me mine. Mine, mine, mine, mine, mine. I'm entitled to it. It's a narcissistic point of view. The government is to provide me with education, medical care, housing, food, whatever. Give it to me. And if somebody has more than me? I'm taking it from them. Because I'm the center of the universe, I'm a narcissist. I learned that at the Fleetwood Mac concert."

The New York Post's Page Six section reported former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was in attendance Monday night, even hanging out backstage with Nicks before the show.

Even if O'Reilly is 6'4" I think I could take him in a fight. He is 69 and he is not in the best of shape. Do you think him standing up makes people run away?

Yikes, Bill and Lindsey are the same age!

That said, I do not like people standing at concerts. I like it when only the first 4 rows can stand and everyone else has to sit down. If that makes me a fuddy duddy, I do not care.

I hate the generalization of the Millennial fans onlfy there because they admire Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie as feminist icons? Like...I'm 29, but have been an obsessed fan for well over 15 years. I am definitely a stander, but I always have seats up front. The only time I have felt compelled to sit was at a Lindsey show because of the intimacy.

Even through Stevie's last run of shows, the pit was up the entire night.

Rock concerts are for standing and dancing.

Symphonies and plays are for sitting.

He not only blames millennials, but specifically *female* millennials for not only dancing and blocking old farts, but for turning the country socialist.

Guess he thinks women should stay at home where they belong and not block the view of crusty old men.

Totally agree with you. He sounds like a real d-bag.
Also, it's known if you want to sit at a rock concert you do not get tickets on the floor.

I don't have a problem with anyone standing especially if you are on the floor in the first 20 rows. I have seen people yell to sit down in that area and it confuse me why someone would buy tickets so close and expect to sit down the entire time.
I sort of lose this philosophy the further back you go. If you are standing up good for you but you are blocking the view of short people, disabled people and people who expected to sit far away and enjoy the show.
My peeve lately is a generational thing about food at concerts. When I saw Buck/McVie, I was nauseous from the smells of hot dogs, that fake cheese nachos, popcorn, and various other food items. I sat and watched giant cardboard trays of food brought to their seats. WTF. Are you there to eat or watch a concert. They were talking about this on Stern the other day "Grazing." Its also happening at work in offices. People bring in food or bowls of candy or other things and people graze all day eating. Seriously, we cant watch a concert or work anymore without stuffing our face with food constantly?
Ok my biggest peeve is the phones. The constant selfies and texting during the show is so freaking annoying. People watching the concert through there camera phones is annoying to me.
I don't always agree with Bill but I agree with him on this instance.

I'm with you. I'm a pretty short person so people standing in front of me making my only option to try and crane my head around to try and watch a big screen somewhere is really disappointing when you paid as much as a decent seat concert ticket costs.

Right. I can stand and dance at home. When I pay for a concert, I want to SEE the performers. To be honest, I really have no need to see the classical musicians because most of them look like dogs. But I'd like to see the rock stars, thank you very much and the insane standers make that impossible.

I don't need drunk people swaying back and forth and blocking my view no matter which way I turn or flailing and hitting me or pushing against me when I have paid extra to be up front and they got up by sneaking there without having any right to do so.

Bill O'Reilly makes Stevie look sane...............nuff said. And if she/the band knew this blowhard was sitting down the whole time.....they would be pissed. If you've been up front with them, you know what they expect. And they've been known to yell at security (from the stage) when security makes people sit down

All I picture while reading this article is a paranoid old man waving his cane around at all the young people on what he thinks is his turf

Oh and the sloshing of their beer on you while they block your view as you stand desperately trying to catch a glimpse of what you paid for.

Ahh, The age old debate, as old as time. I like to groove and move to my favorite songs live. It just makes it that much better.

I will say, I saw The Eagles last summer, last minute up in the nose bleeds at the Garden in Boston. My whole section was sitting the entire time. I was ok with that, I just wanted to see them. I have to admit though, I was HORRIFIED to see the entire floor sitting for the entire night. They got up for the last few. At that moment, I was very glad to be a FM fan. If you buy a ticket in the first couple rows, its pretty understood that you need to stand.

This O'Reilly piece had me howling with laughter. I can understand his frustration. I'm an old fart, but I was an old fart at age 14 when I saw Fleetwood Mac play with the Trojan marching band at the Forum in 1979, and I was perturbed that everyone was standing and screaming and carousing. I have felt O'Reilly's seething rage at all the concerts I've been to, and that made me laugh.

Most people obviously like to stand and dance. Don't want to rain on their parade, but I hate it. My solution is to just don't go—watch on PalladiumTV or YouTube.

The problem is exacerbated by the placement of actual chairs on the floor. It's a confusing semiotic signal. Maybe every floor in an arena ought to be standing only or general admission. If you want a seat, buy up in the rafters. The thing about seats is that some people want to use them and some people don't. But why do the people who do, always buy their seat behind the people who don't?

On the other hand, if I were seeing Kool and the Gang blazing through Get Down On It and people were sitting, I'd think they were assholes.
