Default Compilation Playlists

I'll begin by saying that my recent attempts to create a 3CD anthology, showcasing most of the Mac's songs from Fleetwood Mac to Tango In The Night, resulted in utter failure! Every time I tried to make it I had to choose about six songs that wouldn't make it to the compilation (yes, even "Oh Diane" was rather hard to part with!), which was about as painless as stabbing my heart.
However, when I decided to do a 2CD compilation instead, everything became much simpler! It's easier because you know which songs you would like to proudly play to your friends, and which ones are guilty pleasures best left for private listening (yes, "Oh Diane", I know I'm embarrassing FM by liking it, but they managed to do that themselves anyway, putting it on "Selections From 25 Years - The Chain"). Anyway, without much further ado, these are the track listings I came up with. The first CD's listing order is somewhat tentative, and suggestions are open for discussion, but I think the case is closed for the second CD. Lastly, each song is sourced from the original (CD) album version, unless otherwise indicated.

CD
The Chain
Over My Head
Dreams
World Turning
Landslide
I'm So Afraid
Warm Ways
Storms
Songbird
Rhiannon
Second Hand News
Say You Love Me
Never Going Back Again
Gold Dust Woman
You Make Loving Fun
Monday Morning
Don't Stop
Go Your Own Way
Silver Springs*
Brown Eyes

CD2
Tusk
Sisters Of The Moon
Think About Me
What Makes You Think You're The One
Love In Store
I Know I'm Not Wrong
Sara*
Over & Over
Not That Funny
Never Forget
Gypsy*
Hold Me
Tango In The Night
Isn't It Midnight
Caroline
Everywhere
Straight Back
Big Love
Little Lies
Seven Wonders

*From (Selections From) 25 Years - The Chain

Yes, "The Chain" is first on the list. But, seriously, if you want to introduce FM to a friend, can you really think of a more appropriate song to start off with? (The correct answer is a resounding "no".)
And, yes, "Sisters Of The Moon" is the album version. Deal with it!
Also note the complete lack of LB material from Mirage - best left for private listening, don't you think? (Sorry Lindsey!)
Anyway, any suggestions?
(As a side note, I realised the other night, while thinking about this compilation, that "I Don't Want To Know" sounds like it belongs on Tusk, not Rumours... or is that just me? )

OK if I was in the car with you being the long time fan that I am I would politely listen to all of these songs. But if you let me control the stereo I would skip several. Not cause I don't like them but because I've heard 'em too much. I highlighted the songs I would listen to, the unhighlighted songs I would skip over.

The Chain
Over My Head

Dreams
World Turning
Landslide
I'm So Afraid
Warm Ways
Storms

Songbird
Rhiannon
Second Hand News
Say You Love Me
Never Going Back Again
Gold Dust Woman
You Make Loving Fun
Monday Morning

Don't Stop
Go Your Own Way
Silver Springs*
Brown Eyes

CD2
Tusk
Sisters Of The Moon
Think About Me
What Makes You Think You're The One
Love In Store
I Know I'm Not Wrong
Sara*
Over & Over

Not That Funny
Never Forget
Gypsy*
Hold Me
Tango In The Night
Isn't It Midnight
Caroline

Everywhere
Straight Back
Big Love

Just one question, why the "25 Years, The Chain" versions of "Gypsy" and "Sara"? I haven't listened to those two in some time, but I assume "Gypsy" has the extra backing vocals at the end (which is the same as the "Mirage" CD isn't it? I know the LP I got back in the day didn't have that version). But I thought the "Sara" on there is the same as on the "Tusk" album? Personally I prefer the "cleaning lady" version or the 10:45 demo version. But that's just me.

Gypsy on the box set is a little longer - different ending. Better than the Mirage cut. Sara is the unedited Tusk version, I think the same that was on vinyl. Of course, you'd rather have the 10 minute Cleaning Lady version. Who wouldn't?

The 10+ min version I have is not the cleaning lady version, it is a different vocal though. Here are the lyrics to that version: (note she says "drownding" instead of drowning).

Wait a minute baby
Stay with me awhile
You said you give me light
But you never show me 'bout the fire

Drowning in the sea of love
Where everyone would love to drown
Oh now it's gone
It doesn't matter anymore
When you build your house
Then call me

And it was just like
A great dark wing
Within the wings of a storm
Maybe I had met my match
He was singing
And undoing
Undoing
The laces
The laces

Oooo oooo oooo

Drowning in the sea of love
That's where everyone would love to drown
And now it's gone
It doesn't what for
No sorrow for sorrow
You can have no more
Said Sara
You're the poet in my heart
Never change
Never stop
But now it's gone
It doesn't matter what for
But when you build your house
Oh then call me home

Hold on
The night is coming
And the starling flew for days
I stay home at night
All the time
I'd go anywhere
Anywhere
Anywhere ask me and I'm there
Yeah, ask me and I'm there
Cuz I care

(The laces)

I care (the laces)

Oh drowning, the sea of love
Where everyone would love to drown
Oh now it's gone
It doesn't matter what for
Oh when you build your house
Call Me

He cried Sara
You're the poet in my heart
Never change, never stop
But now it's gone
It doesn't matter what for
Well when you build your house
Oh then call me

Oh....

And it was just like
A great dark wing
Within the wings of a storm
Maybe I had met my match
He was singing
And undoing
Undoing
The laces
The laces

Drowning
In the sea of love
Where everyone
Would love to drown
I'd be drowning
In the sea of love
Where everyone would love
Would love to drown
Oh drowning

Could you speak a little louder
Dreaming
And the wind became crazy
There's a heartbeat!!
Never really died
Swallow all your pride
And you reached her gently

Oooo

Ooo ahh

Ooo ahh

Ahhhhh oooooohh

Swallow all your pride
There's a heartbeat
And it never really died
Never really died
Wind became
Crazy
Could you speak a little louder

Oooh ahh

Oooh ahh

Wind became.....

Correct on Gypsy. Corect on Sara. But what is this Cleaning Lady version of which I have not yet heard?!?! Is it on youtube at all? Unfortunately there is an 80min constraint, and I had to sack "Beautiful Child" to fit the list on an 80min CD.
Anyway, is the track order suitable for CD1, or should there be some slight reordering?
Also, the idea of the compilation is that I'd give it to people (and encourage them to buy FM albums, of course!) to showcase. And I'd listen to it myself, of course. I just think TVBOFM made some mistakes, with both track selection and ordering...

Well the 8min Cleaning Lady version of Sara is on the Tusk remaster CD.

Why is it referred to as the 'cleaning lady' version?

I just listened to the first CD (well, playlist, seeing as it's not finalised yet), and at first it was hard to get into. Then when "Storms" followed "Warm Ways", I was all like:
"Yes, that's exactly what I'm looking for! This should be an album!"
So I've changed the playlist to this now:

CD1
The Chain
Dreams
I'm So Afraid
World Turning
Over My Head
Landslide
Warm Ways
Storms
Songbird
Rhiannon
Never Going Back Again
Gold Dust Woman
You Make Loving Fun
Second Hand News
Say You Love Me
Monday Morning
Don't Stop
Go Your Own Way
Silver Springs*
Brown Eyes

CD2
Tusk
Sisters Of The Moon
Not That Funny
Think About Me
What Makes You Think You're The One
Love In Store
I Know I'm Not Wrong
Never Forget
Sara*
Over & Over
Gypsy*
Hold Me
Tango In The Night
Isn't It Midnight
Caroline
Everywhere
Straight Back
Big Love
Little Lies
Seven Wonders

I'll report back here to tell everyone whether or not they're supposed to play these as they are or not.
(Btw, I originally had "Over My Head" after "The Chain" because of the closely themed lyrics. I now think that was a mistake, obviously...)

Gosh! I completely forgot to report back here! I'm not sure how I could've forgotten...
Anyway, last night was an equal-record hot night in Melbourne (27C, or 80F), so I naturally couldn't sleep. Instead, I threw caution to the winds, and burned the two albums as they stood (without even checking the tracks were okay - on one computer of mine "Gold Dust Woman" won't work properly about mid-way through... ) at about 3am in the morning. I then set about listening to them until about 6am (I went to sleep at 6:30am and got up for work at 8:30am... ). So, here's my opinion:
If you listen to the first playlist as I've put it down here, you'll never listen to either the Rumours or Fleetwood Mac albums again! I was truly amazed at how a bit of thoughtful sequencing could enhance the music so much! Honestly, after listening to it, I doubt I could listen to the tracks on that playlist in any other way! If it were available to buy as an album, I'd buy it without a moment's hesitation, even given that I have both albums and the CD I burned! Basically, do yourself a favour and play my playlist!! I'd die of shock if you were disappointed! The best way to describe it is as a gradual stroll past a black wall, with each step making for a slightly lighter shade of grey. Then there comes a point where you say, "How did the wall wind up white? It started out black!", but looking back along the wall you can see the gradual continuous change from black to white, with all shades of grey. Then you continue walking until the wall is once again black. You'll probably understand the analogy better by listening to the playlist... so do it now, dammit!!
As for the second playlist... well, I wouldn't change it, because it maximally enhances what tracks are on there the way it is. It's just that I love Tusk, Mirage and TITN a lot, so to have so many tracks from those albums missing from this playlist does make for a bit of disappointment. However, were I to play it to a friend, I'd be thinking "If you don't like this you're obviously not listening to it!" The best way to describe this playlist is similar to the other one, except that you have someone nudging you constantly as you walk, saying "Pay attention to the changing wall!" This one you won't drift off to like the other playlist, because the progression isn't quite as natural. That said, because you're a bit more alert, you should be able to kinda see where it's heading. In any case, if you're not a great fan of Mirage or TITN because they're "mixed bags", you should certainly give this playlist a go! And if you do love them, play this list anyway, at least once! Now, dammit!!
