Am I Seeing Things???
I noticed on one of the videos from the Oakland show that there looks to be some guy playing a drum set in the dark behind Mick? Then I was watching the live in Boston DVD from the last tour and there is that guy looking like he's playing drums behind Mick? Is that so? What does he play? And why is he the only one in the dark?

I did notice there were some drums set up behind Mick's as I was waiting for the show to start. I thought it was sorta odd. Once it began, I got lost in the band and never noticed if anyone was actually playing them.

That drummer gets an introduction - so he's no secret... I think he just adds extra beats where Mick can't... Plus isn't he the guy that also wraps Mick in his cape when he takes his break?

Isn't there somebody that does "other" percussion as well?

I noticed him back there too. Someone behind me asked if Mick was miming his drums. I politely said it would be stupid to mime the drums because you'd have to make every movement that goes with playing, but not hit the heads. There is absolutely no point. Anyhoo...he was really helping Mick out on Secondhand News!

That's his name... Yeah, I saw that, so he's doing this at every show? I know in the Mirage video a guy does that for Mick. So is this like a traditional thing for Mick, I never really noticed in any of the footage I've seen from previous tours if his asst. gives him a drink.

Okay, I understand having a percussionist it just looked like he was actually playing a drum set which was weird since Mick is a kick ass drummer. That's why I thought it was odd.

It's Steve Rinkov, the drumtech/stageassistant of Mick and additional drummer on some songs. There's no extra percussionist on this tour. Steve drummed on the SYW tour too. And that tour already had an extra percussionist in Taku Hirano. So there were three guys pounding drums on that tour on some points in the show. Mick can do it alone though.

I think Mick needs that assistance because of problems he has with tempo.
The other drummer might be providing (in addition to fills & such) a sort of human click track for Mick.

He was there in Rotterdam too....was wondering what he was doing. But a human clicktrack (metronome) makes sense....because you could hardly hear the extra value of it...
Then again, on SYW they had 3 percussionistst and I once saw Dire Straits and they used two prominent drummers too.... |
