I think he's actually ok in my book...

In other news, didn't realize he played a Turner! Nice!

Let you down?
I don't understand why artists change the lyrics to songs like that. I find it really annoying! Especially when it changes the intention entirely! Once I heard a cover of John Lennon's "Happy Xmas", in which the "let's hope" of the "let's hope it's a good one" line was changed to "let's pray" - something which I'm sure Lennon wouldn't have been very impressed with ("Imagine" summed up his thoughts on religion pretty well). So JM's keep/let change alone put me off listening to any more of it...
That said, I quite like John Mayer, although I haven't listened to any of his material for quite some time now...

Default Review of John Mayer in concert

By Heather LovejoyStory updated at 4:16 AM on Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010

Weird moment:

After "Half of My Heart," Mayer went into "Dreams," a Fleetwood Mac tune sung by Stevie Nicks. It was impossible to overlook that "Half of My Heart" features Taylor Swift on his latest album, "Battle Studies." Considering Swift's painful Grammy performance alongside her idol, Nicks, and the harsh criticism that followed, it was hard to know what to make of it. Was he trying to point out that he can sing a Nicks' song just fine, unlike Swift?

His music isn't bad. I've seen him in concert and it was an excellent show. I think he's a douche, but that has very little to do with his musical output and almost all to do with his media-courting, whorish ways.

It's not that bad, but lately I've been having really negative, visceral reactions to FM/Stevie Nicks covers . I need to go listen to Stevie sing Dreams now to get that bad taste out of my mouth.

Any guy that sings a song about "Who says I can't get stoned?" can't be all bad!!!!!!

He's obviously not Stevie, and no cover of "Dreams" could ever match hers, but what the hell. I give the guy credit for trying.

A brilliant stroke.
Yeah I really liked it to! I haven't heard anyone do something like this before! And come on... we've heard SO many versions, from FMAC themselves and everyone else... and what a SURPRISE to hear this. Perhaps the trick was that i listened to it, not watched it. Yeah... like the music.. anyone notice the background singers keep trying to sing it like the original? funny, and that Mayer kept singing it his way, but they kept naturally singing it the way we all do.
Noice surprise! I'm going to give it another listen

Am I the only one who hears Bette Davis Eyes in there too?

It's OK. Not bad, not spectacular.

Pretty much this.

I started liking Mayer before he hit big, so I have a kind of nostalgic attachment to his earlier music. I'm not as active of a follower as I was years ago but I still get his new albums and enjoy them. And a major pro to Mayer is that he does write his own stuff, he sings it, he plays guitar and in the current music landscape, those things aren't given. And personally, I think he does it pretty well.

I also tend to always like when mainstream artists cover Fleetwood Mac and do well with it, like he does in this video. If anything, it's John shouting out to his own influences and I like that.

And a friend was pointing this out to me, about a week ago.....his songs aren't that great! Yeah, he's a media darling, but that's about it! RS feels the need, to put him in every issue, but it's not really for his body of work, but his.....status.

I did have the pleasure of doing monitors for him, right as his career was skyrocketing, and he was very polite and friendly, but I've not been really impressed, with his body of work.
The studio version of City Love is beautiful...

See, his music isn't bad when I'm in a chill mood- but I get the impression that he is a douche, and I have a hard time separating the two. So it's hard for me to be like "yes, this was good".
