Isn't creating kind of a highfalutin term? How about just doodling? Messing around?

Oh, no. Not again . . . .

Strand, how have you been? What are you up to these days?

Maybe through all those years it was a little "You're here cos I saw so." message to Ms. Nicks.

"Look, if I wanted to, I could make a virtual Stevie, and you wouldn't be needed. So STFU and do as your told."

Naturally, I'm kidding. But it's funny to think about such instances.

Default Hold Me

There are several earlier songs that Stevie is either very faint in the mix or not at all (at least to my ear):

White Album:
Over My Head...Single mix a little better
World Turning...very minimal
Rumours:
Don't Stop....Not too audible, but there to a slight extent
Songbird
Tusk:
Think About Me....Not too audible. Single version much better (unless it's Lindsey)
Save Me A Place....I don't think she's on it.
What Makes You Think You're The One....obviously not on it.
Not That Funny....Obviously not on this song.
That's Enough For Me.....Not on this song.

Stevie is entirely absent from World Turning. She is also not on Songbird, Not that Funny, and WMYTYTO. I think she is on the rest you have mentioned.

Stevie's definitely on the studio version of Everywhere. You can hear her prominently in the mix. In his book, Mick mentions how Stevie insisted that she be on it.

I thought Stevie was on Only Over You, Book of Love, and Wish You Were Here. I could be wrong.

I think that in the FM FM and Rumours era, La Nicks and LB's voice were very difficult to tell apart at times. Of course, La Nicks had a wider range then than now and when she went really high, she sounded nothing like LB, whise voice was already very high for a male. Listening to that track of the making of "The Chain" when they are finding the harmony structure demonstrates this point well; it also demonstrates why I think her vocals then were among the most interesting and compelling of any of her contemporary female singers in that genre.

The Chain
Sausalito 1976(?)

As does La Nicks' high harmony of Over My Head and her lead on Beautiful Child.

Lindsey's use of the speed oscillator in the studio perhaps has a basis in his fondness for the vocals on old tracks from the 1950s & early '60s, when the doo-wop groups were big. Those groups frequently treated backup vocals at the extreme ends of the range spectrum for men: high alto & baritone, & even falsetto soprano.

Whenever I think about what Lindsey is trying to do on a record or why he is trying to do it, I remind myself of the musical styles from his younger years that he learned to simulate.

On "Say You Will," I think Lindsey deliberately emphasizes Stevie's heavy nasality (no bottom end in her voice anymore) by flanging or phasing her lead vocal so frequently (like on "Everybody Finds Out" & "Illume" & "Destiny Rules"). As for why he does this, I don't know. I find the sound unpleasant, but maybe he really digs it. Of course, he phases his own vocals often enough, too, especially on his last two solo albums.

I honestly do not grasp what you're saying. Could you re-phrase (no pun intended) so a non-studio person like me understand?

I think he's saying that Lindsey has been adding studio trickery and effects over Stevies voice that brings out a more nasal quality to it.

Hmmm, I would disagree that Stevie can be heard prominently in the mix on "Everywhere". I suppose she could be singing background parts in the chorus, but those voices have been so heavily processed with studio trickery that it could be any of them (Nicks, McVie, Buckingham). Contrast with The Dance version, where her voice is prominent in the chorus background vocals. I wish they would have used that vocal arrangement on the studio version.

LB admitted in a long ago interview that he electronically manipulated his voice to sound like Stevie's on the "Book Of Love" intro, which certainly fooled me until I read that. But I don't hear her on "Only Over You" or "Wish You Were Here".

I'm a non-studio person, Tony. Think of the vocal sound of the opening lines of "Everybody Finds Out." It has that space-age, wobbly quality. It's akin to a phased effect, with minimal bottom end (or low frequencies).

Flanging & phasing are audio processing techniques that alter the peaks & troughs of sound waves.

Stevie has a natural nasal quality to her singing & projection. In my last post, I suggested the idea that Lindsey uses processing techniques to compound that nasal quality in her.

Here's a YouTube video of some audio processing of a vocal using Pro Tools.
